Have you checked your mailbox lately?

You may have recently received a letter in the mail from Mayor DeShawn Williams about community solar, and we wanted to follow up to let you know that it is legitimate.

The City of is partnering with Nexamp on a community solar project located at our closed landfill. Through the State of Illinois’ Illinois Shines program, Urbana residents can subscribe and receive credits on their utility bills without installing solar panels on their own homes.

Nexamp has sent letters to eligible residents with more details, and I encourage you to take a look if you’re interested in saving on energy costs while supporting clean, local power.

To learn more or sign up, visit nexamp.com/Urbana or call 844-303-4947.

*****UPDATE TO POST*****
The Urbana Police Department is warning the public about recent scam attempts involving individuals falsely claiming that you have a warrant for your arrest or are involved in a legal matter.

On 04/16/2026 we received reports of calls coming from numbers associated to the Urbana Police Department and City of Urbana.

Please be aware that phone numbers can be spoofed, meaning a caller may appear to be calling from a legitimate City of Urbana number when they are not. To ensure the call is legitimate, ask for the caller’s name and the department they represent, and inform them you will callback. You can verify the contact by calling back using an official number listed on the City of Urbana website or another trusted source.

These scammers may pressure you to provide bank account information, credit card details, or purchase pre-paid debit or gift cards. They often use aggressive or threatening language to create urgency. In some cases, they may even claim to be calling on behalf of a family member to gain your trust.

Also remember:

The police will NOT ask for payment or financial information over the phone

The police will NOT demand payment using gift cards or prepaid debit cards

Legitimate agencies will not pressure you to act immediately without verification

If you receive a call like this:

Do NOT provide personal or financial information
Hang up and verify the claim independently through a trusted source

Contact the Urbana Police Department at 217-384-2320 for guidance.

You may also contact the agency or institution directly using a verified phone number

We encourage everyone to take a moment to verify before sending money or sharing personal information. Scammers rely on fear and urgency. Slow down and confirm the source.

Please share this information with family, friends, and especially those who may be more vulnerable to these tactics.

Hope to see you all there!
