As the school year winds down, student work samples can provide powerful insight into which instructional materials truly supported student learning—and where gaps still exist.

💡 Student work analysis should help educators make decisions about both instruction and instructional materials.

When student work reveals confusion, weak reasoning, or incomplete understanding, it may be time to examine:
✔️ the rigor of the task
✔️ the quality of the models and scaffolds
✔️ the effectiveness of guided practice
✔️ whether the resource supports deep understanding

Student work can help teams decide what instructional resources to:
• keep
• revise
• supplement
• replace

Summer planning is a great time to use student evidence to strengthen instruction and improve curriculum effectiveness for next year.

Check the Alignment of the Lessons and Tasks You Plan to Assign
Does your lesson really align to the standard?

✅ True alignment means your lesson meets all 3 C’s of the standard:
• Content: What the standard requires students to know and understand
• Context: Where, when, or how the standard specifies learning must occur (e.g., text genre, historical period)
• Cognitive Demand: The thinking skill or mental process(es) the standard requires students to perform

If your lesson meets only part of the standard, tweak your instruction or add a supplemental activity to bridge the gap.

✨ Check alignment of any lesson, task or assessment in minutes with Learning List’s Alignment Tool.

Many instructional materials claim to support English Learners, but most rely on general teaching strategies, like front-loading vocabulary or small-group instruction, that are intended for many student groups.

What’s often missing are EL-specific supports tied to students’ levels of English proficiency.

💡Tip: High-quality instructional materials adjust language demands by proficiency level. Look for features such as flexible text complexity, scaffolded academic vocabulary, and supports for listening, speaking, and reading.
