‘Food as medicine’ is reaching new heights in Prince Georges County Government e-Community! 🥕

Patients at the UM Capital Region Medical Center in Largo are now able to be prescribed fresh and nutritious food that they are able to pick up from the on-site food pharmacy. This model minimizes barriers to food security and healthy eating for expecting parents and patients with some chronic diseases, like hypertension. There is data to support that, with tailored support of the food pharmacy team, some enrolled patients have already seen drastic changes to their health.

Director Jennifer Amaya Thompson and staff were grateful to join the University of Maryland Medical System, Capital Area Food Bank, Acting Maryland Department of Human Services Secretary Rodgers, Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Atticks, the Prince George’s County House Delegation, PGC Council Member At-Large Blegay and many other local partners for yesterday's food pharmacy open house.

Being a part of means being a part of a community of individuals and teams who are dedicated to the work of the heart, and who oftentimes become family. 🫂

Yesterday, Acting Human Services Secretary Stacy Rodgers visited leaders at our 805 Brightseat Rd. location, as she continues her tour of the local departments. Acting Secretary Rodgers gave insight into her human services career journey, shared her vision for Maryland Department of Human Services, as Maryland’s 4th largest agency, and encouraged the team to be on the pursuit of excellence, over perfection.

We are excited to have transformational leaders like Acting Secretary Stacy Rodgers and Director Jennifer Amaya Thompson, who are both committed to supporting families, developing the leaders of tomorrow, and elevating the work of the Department.

Delivering greater outcomes for families that touch the Department of Social Services involves community-informed solutions and strong partnerships with local organizations, who are doing incredible work to also support County families.

Director Jennifer Amaya Thompson’s strategic vision for the Department revolves around this concept of bringing stakeholders together for inclusive engagement. Earlier this week, we hosted a nonprofit community listening session, with organizations who primarily serve Spanish-speaking communities in the County, to explore opportunities for partnerships, to share insights into the current social services landscape, and to gain a broader understanding of how we can come together to close any potential service gaps. 📊

This is the first of a series of community-based events that we look forward to hosting through the summer. Events like these support data-informed and continuous improvement of the Department to ultimately better serve Prince Georgians. We’d like to thank Interim DCAO Reid, representatives from the County Executive’s Office and the Pgcohr, as well as every community organization who were able to participate in this week's conversation. 💙

Director Jennifer Amaya Thompson recently participated in a roundtable with Latino elected officials and agency partners in Prince Georges County Government e-Community. County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy brought each of us to the table with Speaker of the House Joseline Peña-Melnyk to discuss what further should be done to support and protect Hispanic/Latino Prince Georgians.

We are grateful to be working as a unified government across state and local offices to do this critical work, and we look forward to continued collaboration. Thank you to the County Executive’s Office for extending the invitation and for hosting such an impactful meeting of the minds.

Prince George’s County has launched a Foster Care Task Force through the PGC Council, and this week was the first convening. The Department of Social Services is excited to be participating alongside our partners as we work towards greater outcomes for children in Out-of-Home Care in the County.

This task force was developed with a council resolution proposed by District 8 County Council Member Ed Burroughs III in 2025. Thank you Council Member Burroughs and Task Force Chair Autumn-Joi Live for having Director Jennifer Amaya Thompson and Deputy Director Dixon be a part of this pivotal conversation to elevate the social safety nets for Prince Georgians. 🫂

_____

Last week, we were proud to join the Pgcohr, the Maryland Department of Human Services, and many community partners for a community resource fair in Hyattsville. We are also grateful that this event aligned with Language Access Month, which is recognized every April. During this event, we were able to reach nearly 8,000 Spanish speakers through livestreaming from those in the crowd.

Across our department, we serve approximately 350,000 families each year in the county, with many being of Hispanic/Latino descent. Nearly 150 languages are spoken within the county and data shows Spanish is one of the most spoken. Our team is committed to connecting with the vibrant multicultural communities in Prince George’s County to raise awareness of services and programs that can benefit families, while we also elevate the positive outcomes of the work of the Department.
