Social media accounts of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office are not intended to constitute a public forum. they are intended to provide the public with law enforcement- and public safety-related information. The sheriff's office does
not allow comments on social media posts effective July 2024. This change is due to the increasing logistical difficulty of monitoring for prohibited comments that contain obscenity, defamation, libel, threats, remarks that disparage or discriminate against anyone based on their s*x, race, religion, national origin, s*xual orientation, disability, etc. It is not the intent of the sheriff’s office for these posts to constitute a public forum. It is still our policy to use social media to communicate up-to-date information to members of the community. The sheriff’s office continues to be committed to providing information to the public, while eliminating the risks associated with litigation and potentially staggering costs to taxpayers. The sheriff’s office continues to maintain multiple avenues for members of the community to communicate with our office to provide tips, report criminal activity, make complaints, request public records, or ask questions through our website at www.sarasotasheriff.org, Crime Stoppers at 941-366-8477 (366-TIPS), dispatch center at 941-316-1201, email at [email protected], and our SCSO app (available at both the Apple Store and Google Play). We will continue to share information on cases and inform our citizens and media of breaking news on our social media platforms and through press releases.
