Kemp Natural Resources Station Dedicated to research, instruction, and outreach concerning the management, conservation, and the sustainable use of northern Wisconsin's natural resources.

Kemp Natural Resources Station is a research and teaching facility operated by the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences of the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Located in the heart of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, Kemp Station’s 231 acres support some of the last remnants of old-growth forest in the Lake States. Several other distinct ecosystems are found on site, including:

-second-growth fore

sts of hemlock, pine, and northern hardwoods
-lake coves
-bogs and one bog lake
-over one mile of shoreline along Tomahawk Lake

This varied environment supports a diverse wildlife population of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and invertebrate, making Kemp Station uniquely suited as a center for natural resources research and education. Kemp Station is dedicated to programs of research, instruction, and outreach concerning the management, conservation, and sustainable use of northern Wisconsin’s natural resources. The goals of Kemp Station are to:

-Conduct research on the ecology, management, conservation, and the sustainable use of northern Wisconsin’s natural resources.
-Transfer information on natural resources management, conservation, and sustainable use to students of all ages.
-Enhance public awareness of current natural resources issues. We welcome visits to Kemp Station; however, the University of Wisconsin has implemented a Closed Campus policy for all remote field stations, including Kemp Natural Resources Station. This means that you must have written permission to be on Kemp Station or other UW field station properties. “No Trespassing” signs are posted at the main entrance, boat launch, and boathouse. Please contact Karla, 715-358-5667 or [email protected], or Scott, 715-892-0391, if you wish to arrange a visit to the property.

Dotted around Wisconsin are UW–Madison’s 12 Agricultural Research Stations. Kemp Station is unique in that it supports research and teaching on natural resource topics, but the other stations support agricultural issues. Those stations are more than farms — they are living laboratories where UW–Madison CALS researchers work shoulder-to-shoulder with Wisconsin farmers on today’s problems in w**d management, cattle nutrition, nitrogen-fixing corn, and so much more. UW–Madison, CALS, and the stations are working together to make Wisconsin grow.

Please take a moment to check out this story featuring three of Kemp's sister stations and the work going on at each:

UW–Madison’s research stations help Wisconsin farmers stay on agriculture’s leading edge.

Did you know Tomahawk Lake is home to some beautiful algae? On Saturday, we were treated to a close up look at some of these beautiful aquatic plants. Visiting from UW-Madison campus were Linda Graham (Professor Emerita) and Marie Trest (Teaching Faculty). They were happy to take samples back to campus for students in Madison to study because you can no longer find the same algae in southern Wisconsin lakes. Attendees were able to view samples under microscopes, collect samples from the lake, and view algae growing on the lake bottom through a special viewing device.

UW-Madison Professor Emeritus, Glen Stanosz, discovered this gem on a recent visit to Kemp Station, he wrote:

Nice clump of "coral fungus", likely in genus Ramaria. Some coral fungi are edible, but many toxic. So, not on MY menu.😆

Earlier this summer, Mary Ann Feist joined to explore the bogs at Kemp. This week, she's back to assist with a sphagnum moss workshop. Sphagnum moss prefers highly acidic water, making bogs an ideal environment for its growth. Sphagnum can hold over 20 times its weight in water, which, when combined with the acidic conditions of the bog, prevents the decomposition of organic materials in the bog. As a result, bogs are a vital form of carbon sequestration.

You may have seen little mushroom caps start to sprout up in your yard after this week's rain. That's what the Northstate Mycological Club is all about. They host weekly forays on local trails to hunt for mushrooms, both edible and not. The club's coordinator, Anne Small, then identifies and records the group's findings. Interested in joining a foray? Visit https://www.northstatemycologicalclub.org/ for more information.

**DISCLAIMER: Never eat a mushroom unless you are 100% sure of its identity. All poisonous mushrooms were collected strictly for educational purposes**
