May 28 – Senior Health & Fitness Day

As we age, everyday movement can become more challenging. Conditions like arthritis, balance disorders, and mobility limitations can impact independence and quality of life.

But movement doesn’t have to look the same to still be meaningful.

With the right support, guidance, and encouragement, staying active can help improve strength, confidence, and overall well-being—no matter the stage of life.

Let’s continue to promote safety, prevent falls, and support independence for our seniors.

Pure Alexia Awareness

Pure Alexia is a neurological condition where a person loses the ability to read—while their ability to write and speak remains intact.

They may recognize individual letters, but putting them together into words becomes slow and difficult, often requiring them to read one letter at a time.

Imagine being able to write a sentence… but not being able to read it back.

It’s a powerful reminder that the brain processes each skill in its own unique way.

With understanding and support, individuals can find new ways to navigate everyday life.

Hemispatial Neglect Awareness

Hemispatial neglect is a neurological condition often caused by a stroke or brain injury, where a person may ignore one side of their surroundings.

This doesn’t mean they can’t see—it means the brain isn’t processing that side of space. Someone might only eat food on one side of a plate or miss objects and people on one side entirely.

It’s a powerful reminder of how the brain shapes our reality—and how different that reality can be.

Patience, awareness, and support make a meaningful difference.

📣 Case Presenters Needed for Upcoming ECHO Webinars

HANDS in Autism is currently looking for individuals and families willing to participate as anonymous case presenters for upcoming ECHO webinars. Presenters can be self advocates, family members, caregivers, relatives, or anyone with lived experience connected to the topic.

All cases are HIPAA and FERPA protected and presented very anonymously.

Webinars are held Fridays from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Upcoming topics include:

Autism & Language Development
Topics may include echolalia, gestalt language processing, scripted language, preferred topics, and the wide spectrum of language abilities.

• June 5, 2026
Accommodations in a Medical Setting
Focused on supporting individuals in healthcare environments, requesting accommodations, communication barriers, advocacy, and navigating medical systems.

• June 12, 2026
Cultural Competence in Education and Healthcare Systems
Discussion may include culturally responsive care, communication differences, religious or linguistic considerations, and improving access across systems.

• July 10, 2026
Support Groups and Networking for Caregivers
Focused on caregiver support, finding quality resources, networking opportunities, and balancing caregiving responsibilities.

Anton Syndrome Awareness

Anton Syndrome is a rare neurological condition where a person is blind—but is unaware of their blindness.

Even though they cannot see, the brain may create the belief that vision is still intact, sometimes leading individuals to describe what they think they’re seeing.

It’s a powerful reminder that the brain doesn’t always interpret reality the way we expect.

Awareness leads to understanding—and understanding leads to compassion.

Dysprosody Awareness

Dysprosody is a neurological condition that affects the tone, rhythm, and emotional expression in a person’s speech.

Someone with dysprosody may speak in a way that sounds flat, robotic, or emotionally different from what they truly feel—often leading to misunderstandings in everyday conversations.

It’s important to remember: the message is still there, even if the delivery sounds different.

Let’s lead with patience, understanding, and empathy.
