My thoughts on data centers in Brown County…
Over the past several weeks, I have heard from many constituents (in an amazingly bipartisan fashion) across Brown County regarding the possibility of large-scale data center development in our community. Their concerns have been clear and consistent, particularly as the Planning, Development and Transportation Committee considers a potential moratorium on data centers.
My position is straightforward: I do not support the unchecked development of large data centers on Brown County farmland. Our agricultural land is one of our county’s greatest assets, and any proposal that could significantly alter our landscape deserves careful review and public scrutiny. Additionally, I do not support taxpayer-funded subsidies for large data center developments. Government should be cautious about providing special incentives that shift costs onto residents and local taxpayers.
I am a strong supporter of economic development, private investment, job creation, and expanding our tax base. Brown County should remain open for business and welcome responsible growth. However, economic development must also be balanced with protecting the interests and well being of current residents and taxpayers.
There are legitimate questions that need to be answered regarding the long-term impacts of large data centers, including their demands on energy infrastructure, potential effects on utility costs, water usage, and the overall impact on local communities. Before moving forward with projects of this scale, we owe it to residents to fully understand these implications.
For that reason, I will likely support a temporary option that would provide Brown County and local municipalities the time necessary to gather information, evaluate potential impacts, and determine the best path forward. I also want the public to understand that the county’s authority is limited to implementing a temporary moratorium; any such action would be intended solely to allow for a thoughtful and informed review process.
My commitment is to protect Brown County’s farmland, safeguard taxpayers, and ensure that any major development proposal is evaluated carefully and transparently. I will continue listening to residents and advocating for policies that put the long-term interests of our communities first.
