On April 12th, 1930, William Faulkner purchased what was then known as “The Bailey Place”, a primitive Greek revival house originally built in 1844 for Robert B. Sheegog. Faulkner became the third owner of the home. It would be several weeks until he moved in with his wife Estelle, since the house had been abandoned for almost 10 years and needed extensive work.

In 1931 he renamed the house Rowan Oak after the rowan tree of Scotland, a symbol of peace and security, and the live oak for strength and solitude. Neither tree have ever been on the property and there is no such thing as a “rowan oak” tree. To add to the irony of its name, the trees that line the home’s entrance are in fact Eastern Red Cedar.

Soon thereafter, Faulkner optioned the surrounding acreage (Bailey Woods) and settled in with Estelle and her two children from a previous marriage, Malcolm and Victoria. Within a few years, their own daughter, Jill, was born. Rowan Oak was the family home of the Faulkners until 1962, the year of William Faulkner’s death. In 1972, Jill Faulkner Summers sold the house to The University of Mississippi to secure it as a place for people worldwide to learn about her father and his work.

Come visit us this week to learn more about the history of the home and of William Faulkner’s literary legacy! 📚Open 10am-4pm Tues-Sat, 1pm-4pm Sun.

This morning we discovered a baby Barred owl hidden in the bushes behind the house. Thank you to Stephanie with MS Wildlife Rehabilitation who advised us on how to safely move this little one to a better and higher location—away from dogs and other potential threats on the ground. Please give this baby some space if you see him today. He’s had enough action in one morning 😅❤️🦉Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation
