Historic Portland Place dates back to around 1720 when the original cabin, a 1 ยฝ story Dutch-framed pioneer house, was built. The home was owned by the Hartshorne family and was expanded and altered over its long history, transforming into the handsome country place we know today. Daniel Ward Seitz, a Hartshorne descendant, bequeathed Portland Place to the Park System in 2008, thus ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Today, the site offers interpretive panels illustrating the story of Portland Place and the Hartshorne family, along with the early settlement of the Navesink Highlands. Free guided tours take place Wednesdays through Sundays through November 14 at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. & 2:30 p.m., with a maximum of 10 persons per tour. Please sign up for tours at the Visitor Center upon arrival.
