It's Molt Search season! What's Molt Search, you ask? It's when community scientists collect, document, and submit their photos of crustacean molts to help managers track the presence or absence of invasive European green crab - as well as gather important data about other native species, like Dungeness crab.

Our partners are hosting several Molt Search trainings this week in Bremerton, Snohomish, Blaine, and Burien. Check out our events calendar or go to wsgcrabteam.uw.edu/moltsearch for more info - and to get Molt Searching 🦀

UW News reports that a new method could help Washington shellfish farmers control a pesky shrimp.

Research led by the UW and funded by Washington state has yielded a non-chemical, proof-of-principle method for killing burrowing shrimp - which suffocate shellfish by displacing sediment - in targeted areas. Using a custom-built platform to apply vibration and pressure to a 50-square-foot region of sediment compacts the sediment and effectively traps shrimp in their burrows.

WSG is excited to welcome Emily Bjornsgard as our new graduate Science Communications Fellow!

Emily is a current master's student at Western Washington University, where she's examining the effects of certain chemical compounds on the survival and feeding abilities of larval forage fishes in the Salish Sea. Before returning to school, Emily worked in the aquarium and environmental education fields, caring for hundreds of Salish Sea species, raising baby fish, and creating volunteer and public learning opportunities about our shared waterways.

We're excited to have you, Emily! Read more about Emily and our graduate SciComm Fellowship on our website. 🔗

Calling UW students! We are hiring a Student Assistant - Marina Pumpout Inspector. Visit bit.ly/boating-student-assistant to learn more and apply!

Washington Sea Grant (WSG) has an outstanding opportunity for a self-motivated, enthusiastic Student Assistant to support WSG staff and our Boating Program to examine pumpout units at marinas around Washington. The student assistant will help ensure our state’s numerous pumpout units are in good working order to serve the boaters of Washington and keep our waters clean.

We are seeking an individual who would be willing to be trained and comfortable traveling around the state to marinas to inventory and inspect pumpouts. The student would be reimbursed for mileage, hotel, and per diem food at the standard state rate for all travel related to this work. Please note this opportunity is available only to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Washington.
