The Digitization Unit, a part of the Electronic Resources and Information Technologies (ERIT) Department, is responsible for Digital Greensboro and for the digitization of primary source materials and other historical and archival resources both within the Univers

ity Libraries and for external keepers of unique historical material, including UNCG faculty and local cultural heritage organizations. Currently staffed by one full-time employees, three employees shared with other areas, and several student assistants, the Digitization Unit handles a variety of projects within Digital Greensboro. A group photograph of soldiers on base during World War II. James Coward is second from left on first row.

Part of the Coward Family Collection. The collection documents the lives of James Monroe Coward (1918-1976) and his wife Sallie Cornelia Smith Coward Buckner (1932-2023), who grew up on farms in Chatham and Randolph counties in North Carolina. Later, James worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation and Cornelia worked in various school cafeterias in Chatham county. The collection includes photographs and scrapbooks documenting Mr. Coward's military service during World War II, the couple's wedding, and other events.

Part of the Martin's Studio Collection housed at the Greensboro History Museum. This extensive photographic archive of over 300,000 images consists primarily of 4x5 inch negatives but also includes some prints and business papers. Carol W. Martin (1911-1993) became the first full time paid professional photographer for the Greensboro Daily News in January 1938. When he left to open his own studio in 1947, he took with him a wealth of his work for the newspaper. His World War II images obviously date to his local photojournalism career. Many of the post-1947 images of businesses, on the other hand, were probably taken by his partner, Malcolm A. Miller (1917-2008). Known as Tex, he was a self-trained photographer who learned his craft from classes at White Oak YMCA and from a backyard chicken-coop-turned-darkroom he built at the family home.

Photograph part of the Sylvia Dean Stanback Collection. Sylvia Dean Stanback is a lifelong resident of Greensboro. She is the great-granddaughter of James Monroe Dean, Sr. (1834-1902) and Lucinda Mitchell Dean (1834-1911). The Mitchell and Dean families played significant roles in the development of Greensboro, and particularly of Providence Baptist Church. James Dean was a Guilford County magistrate, philanthropist, and businessman--the owner of Dean's Brickyard, which supplied bricks for the construction of many early Greensboro landmarks.
