Abuse doesn’t always leave bruises—but it can still steal someone’s freedom. 😔

Back in 1957, sociologist Albert Biderman mapped out the tactics used to break prisoners of war. Later, Evan Stark recognized the same pattern in many abusive relationships and named it coercive control.

Coercive control isn’t one explosive incident—it’s a slow, strategic campaign of domination. It can look like isolating someone from friends and family, constant criticism that chips away at their confidence, or micromanaging money, time, clothing, phone use, even everyday choices until life feels like a trap. It may include threats, stalking, punishment, or violence—but many survivors are controlled without ever being hit.
