James Meredith was allowed enrollment at the University of Mississippi, but it did not come without a fight. Both the State of Mississippi and the University actively worked to keep the University a whites only school. After being rejected by the University in 1961, Meredith filed suit with the assistance of the NAACP. The suit went to the highest court in the land where the Supreme Court ruled that James Meredith must be admitted.

Despite the ruling, Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett, worked tirelessly to prevent Meredith’s enrollment. He took the roll of the Registrar at the University (official who handles student records) to block his admission. On September 30, 1962 a deal was reached between Barnett and the U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy, resulting in a riot of angry whites. The mob threw bricks and shot at U.S. Marshalls stationed at the University to enforce court orders & protect James Meredith. President Kennedy would call on the National Guard to support Marshalls. Two bystanders died, 206 marshals and soldiers were wounded, and 200 individuals were arrested. On October 1, 1962 Meredith was finally allowed to register for courses.

As we remember John Lewis, let’s also remember The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Flip through to see SNCC in action during the civil rights movement. We seek to learn from SNCC and its success as we represent Black voices here at the University of Mississippi ✊🏾

“I want to see young people in America feel the sprint of the 1960/ and find a way to get in the way. To find a way to get in trouble. Good Trouble.“

The Honorable John Lewis made “Good Trouble” indeed as one of the “Big Six” lead organizers of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom of 1963. The term “Big Six” originated with the founding of the Council for United Civil Right Leadership (CUCRL). The council was an umbrella group formed in June 1963 to organize the Civil Rights Movement. UCRL brought together groups with multiple strategies and agendas. They worked together however to address the times they were in and drive change forward. The “Big Six included John Lewis, Dr.Martin Luther King, James Farmer, A.Phillip Randolph, Roy Wilkins, and Whitney Young. Although there were 6 lead organizers there were Seven organizations apart of the CUCRL. They are listed below:

~ Southern Christian Leadership Conference led by MLK
~ The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) les by Roy Wilkins
~ The NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund
~ The National Urban League –ledWhitney Young
~ National Council of Negro Women led by Dorothy Heights
~ The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee led by John Lewis
~ The Congress of Racial Equality led by James Farmer
