Recently, The University of Alabama’s Young Americans for Liberty Chapter became aware that an on-campus student organization would be hosting Jared Taylor, a white nationalist, on campus in mid-April. We as an organization are not affiliated in any capacity with this organization or event. Young Americans for Liberty stands for liberty and freedom; racism is innately hostile to these principles and has no place on this campus or within our organization.
While we are committed to the promotion of free speech and diversity of opinion on college campuses, we view the opinions of the aforementioned speaker and organization to be abhorrent, and view the invitation as a grasp at relevancy by a group of individuals who do not represent the views of students at The University of Alabama. It is our view that this event is fallacious in its claimed intent, which is to challenge “American and Western ideals faced in our country," and is instead intentionally inflammatory for the sake of provocation itself.
In response to the bigotry and hatred displayed by this speaker and the organization hosting him, Young Americans for Liberty is participating in a day of community service with other organizations on campus. While we recognize the right of the aforementioned speaker and organization to espouse their detestable beliefs, we choose to actually contribute to society by enriching our community with a spirit of servitude and love.
We encourage others to join us in helping our community.
If you are interested in supporting or participating in this day of community service, please contact YAL’s University of Alabama Chapter President, Zachary Warren. We will publish information about this event on our Facebook and Instagram platforms when it is finalized.
The Young Americans for Liberty chapter at The University of Alabama seeks to foster civil discourse, freedom, and liberty on campus. The UA Chapter advocates for individual freedom and autonomy through a free marketplace and exchange of ideas and celebrates diversity of thought and character. We do not endorse or affiliate with any party or candidate.
