To promote its annual Santa Community Project, which aims to champion childhood literacy through the joyful gifting of books, fostering a lifelong love of reading and ensuring every child has the tools to succeed. Founded in 1988, The Mothers Group is a 501c3 non-profit organization and constitutes generous and community-minded women in the Tulsa area who are dedicated to enriching and empowering
the lives of children through educational, cultural, and social initiatives. Committed to making a positive difference in the lives of tomorrow’s leaders, The Mothers Group created and presented its first city-wide Santa Community Project in 1989. From the beginning, standing room only crowds of children filled the facility welcoming the jolly couple to Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Santa Community Project
The Santa Project is a highly anticipated community-wide celebration of diversity and inclusion that offers opportunities for collaboration among education, arts, and cultural groups with an overall mission of uplift for diverse children throughout the Tulsa Metropolitan area. The widely acclaimed annual educational and cultural event has a three-fold focus:
1) The Santa Community Project meets an unmet need in the community by providing children with a free and much-desired photograph with Santa and Mrs. Claus in a geographical area that is absent of traditional shopping malls where these kinds of photo opportunities are available, hence filling a void in the community.
2) The Santa Project is dedicated to increasing the love for books among children and to growing the number of reading-rich households by gifting age-appropriate and culturally-relevant books to youngsters, which helps to address the state-wide issue of children who score below the basic level on national reading tests.
3) The Santa Event offers meaningful opportunities for community residents, local organizations, and state associations to feature and showcase performances by talented youth who represent all parts of the city and state, providing inspired ideas for children and their families who attend the event. Dedication and Longevity
A number of women have volunteered with the Mothers Group to participate in its mission. Although some members have moved out of state, they often return to lend their support to this yearly community event. Each former and current member has contributed to the effectiveness of the organization and success of the Santa Project. Approaching 25 years, the longevity of the Santa Project demonstrates the compassionate hearts, creative minds, and critical action of the dedicated women who comprise the membership of The Mothers Group Inc.
