Effective Saturday, March 28 at 8 a.m., the National Weather Service has issued a ** 🚩🚩RED FLAG WARNING🚩🚩** for some North Carolina counties. For counties that aren’t under a red flag, fire danger is still critical. Review weather alerts for North Carolina at weather.gov.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create dangerous fire behavior.

While open burning is permitted during a red flag, it is NOT advised. Please postpone ALL outdoor burning. If there was ever a time to show you can follow instructions the first time they are given, it’s now.

Careless debris burning is the leading cause of wildfires in North Carolina, and you are our best defense against wildfire. For wildfire readiness and prevention tips: preventwildfirenc.org

đźš© Red Flag Warning in Effect đźš©

We want to remind our community that a Red Flag Warning has been issued for our area. Dry conditions, low humidity, and strong winds create the perfect environment for fires to spread quickly and unpredictably.

Please help keep our community safe by avoiding outdoor burning until conditions improve. This includes burn piles and any burning with open flames.

The National Weather Service has issued a **🚩RED FLAG WARNING🚩** for North Carolina counties.

Be safe out on the roads!

❄️ First Snow of the Season! ❄️

This is the first snow we’ve seen this year here at the Jackson County Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Our staff will be monitoring the weather event throughout the day.

At this time, NCDOT has not reported any impassable roads in Jackson County, but please remember that roads could be slick—especially on bridges and higher elevations.

If you must travel, use extra caution, slow down, and allow for extra stopping distance. Stay safe, Jackson County! 🚗❄️

We ask for your thoughts and prayers as one of our officers undergoes knee surgery tomorrow. We wish them a smooth procedure and a speedy recovery.

🔥Increased Fire Danger Statewide!

Emergency management staff from Jackson County discussed the increased risks and hazards associated with current weather today in a meeting with our partners at the North Carolina Forest Service.

NCFS Jackson County Assistant County Ranger Sue Ellen Gibbs-Huerta said “The next few days we’ll have lower RHs (Relative Humidity) and higher wind speeds. Leaves are dropping, people will be wanting to burn. Everyone should exercise caution this fall, especially going into the next few days, as increased fire weather is raising fire danger levels are also increased. It is best to avoid burning on windy days and the times of the day when RH is lowest.”

In closing, the NCFS nor Jackson County have issued a “Burning Ban”. We just strongly discourage you from burning outdoors until further notice. The combination of gusty winds, low relative humidity, and dry conditions can create rapid fire growth situations.

Today around 12:20 we received an emergency call in reference to an individual who had fell off the top of Paradise Falls. This individual was in critical condition once fire department personnel made contact with him. We were able to get him out and into more definitive medical care thanks to Harris EMS, NC Emergency Management, and the NCHART team blackhawk. We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who assisted during this rescue operation. Your quick response, teamwork, and determination assisting us and allowed for a safe and affective rescue.
