Today, Corbett Fire joined Gresham Fire, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, and AMR at Dabney State Recreation Area for a media day focused on Sandy River water safety ahead of the upcoming warm weather.

During the event:
• Gresham Fire demonstrated its Jet Ski watercraft and Zodiac rescue raft
• AMR shared plans for lifeguards at Glenn Otto Park and announced free life jackets available at select river locations
• The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office highlighted dive team operations
• Corbett Fire showcased our AquaEye sonar device and thermal imaging drone used to help locate missing swimmers and boaters

As river traffic increases, our agencies continue working together to improve safety, preparedness, and emergency response along the Sandy River corridor.

Thank you to all partner agencies helping keep our community and visitors safe this summer.

Quick tips:
✔️ Remove dry leaves, needles, and debris
✔️ Keep grass trimmed and green
✔️ Space out plants and trees
✔️ Focus on the first 5–30 feet around your home

UPDATE: ATTENTION SANDY RIVER BOATERS - OBSTRUCTIONS
Be prepared to portage around an obstruction located TWO MILES UPSTREAM of Dabney State Park on the Sandy River.

News Release from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office River Patrol Unit

A safety advisory is in effect for community members using the Sandy River between Oxbow Regional Park and Dabney State Recreation Area.

Following a powerful storm cycle in December 2025, the river’s path has naturally shifted, creating new and potentially significant hazards for recreational users.

Rivers are dynamic, meaning their paths are subject to change during high-flow events. South of Camp Angelos, the Sandy River previously flowed north with the primary channel located east of a prominent wooded island. Following the December 2025 storms, the primary current now flows to the west side of that same island.
The change in the river’s course has introduced "strainers" – fallen and submerged trees – directly into the new primary channel. The current now pulls watercrafts and swimmers toward these obstructions.

Due to the combination of water depth, submerged rocks, and these new tree hazards, this section now contains small rapids -- making navigation difficult or unexpected.

Users may find themselves unable to bypass debris, potentially forcing them to abandon their crafts. Recent patrols have documented several abandoned inner tubes caught in the newly formed debris fields.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office River Patrol Unit has posted warning signs at both Oxbow Regional Park and Dabney State Recreation Area.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office River Patrol Unit encourages everyone to be prepared for unexpected river conditions. Before launching at Oxbow Regional Park, ensure you are equipped with the following:

Life jackets - A properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket should be worn at all times while on the water.

Communication Tools – Keep a loud, waterproof sound-signaling device (such as a whistle) attached to your person or life jacket.

Lights – If you anticipate being on the water near dawn, dusk or night, carry waterproof lights.

Situational Awareness – Do not rely on outdated digital maps. Maintain a constant visual watch for unmarked hazards and be prepared.

Corbett Fire Receives Wildfire Staffing Grant to Enhance Summer Response

Corbett, OR — Corbett Fire is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a wildfire staffing grant from the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office for the upcoming season. This funding allows the department to staff its brush units and deploy them on patrol during critical periods throughout the summer wildfire season.

With increased staffing, Corbett Fire will be more aggressive and proactive in identifying and suppressing wildfires before they can spread. These added resources strengthen the department’s ability to take immediate action, keeping fires small and protecting lives, property, and natural resources.

Brush units are specifically designed to access difficult terrain, allowing firefighters to reach and attack fires in areas that are challenging for larger apparatus.

In addition, Corbett Fire is excited to share that a third brush unit will soon be placed in service at the Aims Fire Station, further strengthening the department’s wildfire response capabilities.

Corbett Fire remains firmly committed to aggressive wildfire suppression and decisive action to protect the community and surrounding lands.

🔥 Chicken Brooder & Heat Lamp Safety Reminder 🔥

Oregon has seen an increase in fires this spring linked to heat lamps and chicken brooders. A few simple precautions can make a big difference.

Safer setup

* Keep brooders in outbuildings whenever possible
* If indoors, use safer alternatives:
* Brooder heat plates
* Radiant panel heaters

If using a heat lamp

* Secure it two ways (example: clamp + chain)
* Use a shatter-resistant bulb with a guard
* Keep at least 18–24 inches from bedding and combustibles
* Keep out of reach of chicks, pets, and children
* Never leave unattended for long periods

Electrical safety

* Plug directly into a wall outlet (no extension cords)
* Use proper wattage bulbs for the fixture
* Inspect cords for damage before each use
* Keep cords away from moisture and high-traffic areas
* Do not modify or overload outlets

Fire protection

* Install working smoke alarms near brooders
* Keep a fire extinguisher nearby
* Check on chicks and equipment frequently

This week, we recognize the voices behind the scenes who are there in every emergency, often before anyone else arrives.

During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, Corbett Fire would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Bureaus of Emergency Communications, our 911 dispatchers. These highly trained professionals answer emergency calls, gather critical information, and coordinate first responders with speed and precision.

They are the calm voice on the other end of the line during someone’s worst day, providing reassurance, instructions, and lifesaving support until help arrives.

Your work is demanding, often unseen, and absolutely essential to everything we do. Thank you for your professionalism, your partnership, and your unwavering dedication to our community.

🔥 Burn to Learn – April 4, 2026 🔥

Corbett Fire recently conducted a “Burn to Learn” training, giving our firefighters a rare and invaluable opportunity to sharpen critical skills in a real structure.

The home was acquired at the end of February, and crews dedicated nearly 60 hours to pre-burn training. This included search and rescue, hose advancement inside a structure, ventilation, and a strong focus on window-based search (V.E.S.).

Why focus on V.E.S.? Because most fires occur between 3–6 AM, and nearly 45% of victims are found in bedrooms (based on firefighter rescue survey data). Window-based search is a targeted, aggressive tactic—crews go directly to likely occupied rooms, enter through windows, isolate the space, and search for victims. It’s a critical skill that can make the difference in saving lives.

On burn day, firefighters spent hours igniting individual rooms and studying fire behavior—gaining hands-on experience that simply can’t be replicated without a live structure. The training concluded with a full burn of the home, allowing crews to observe how fire behaves in a fully involved structure from start to finish.

This type of training is truly invaluable—refining skills, building confidence, and ultimately making our community safer.

We want to extend a huge thank you to Todd Mickalson and his family for donating the structure. Your generosity directly contributes to the safety of our firefighters and our community.

⚠️ Downed Power Line Safety Reminder ⚠️

If you encounter a downed power line, treat it as live and extremely dangerous.

For your safety, stay at least 50 feet away, about the length of a school bus.

Do not touch the line, nearby objects, or attempt to move anything yourself. Keep others back and call PGE at 503-464-7777 or message them on their page immediately to report it.

Your awareness and caution help keep everyone safe.
