Maryland real estate agents came together this week for the annual Real Estate Rumble to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association Maryland Chapter. Raising more than $200,000 since 2022, the event was started by Annapolis-based realtor Rachael Acevedo after losing her father to Alzheimer’s disease.

“I started the fundraiser with several other philanthropists in the real estate space,” says Acevedo. “We created a really fun event to bring together the real estate community, focusing on making an impact on local communities and raising awareness for an amazing cause.”

This Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, we’re celebrating volunteers who are supporting brain health and the fight to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.

Michael Evans participates as a runner in the Akron Marathon for Do What You Love to End ALZ. Plus, he gets the added benefit of supporting his own brain health in the process!

“One healthy habit I do every day to support my brain is stay active – whether that be running, biking, hiking, swimming, rock climbing, weight lifting, paddle boarding or pickleball. I do this because staying physically fit helps to challenge my brain, lowers stress, improves my mood and reduces inflammation – all factors that can contribute to the prevention of Alzheimer’s. Join me in doing what you love to help end Alzheimer’s.”

Take charge of your brain health – it’s never too early or too late to start. To register for Do What You Love to End ALZ, visit alz.org/dowhatyoulove.

🏃‍♂️ Today, we celebrate a champion in every sense of the word. Thomas Sanders is a dedicated Alzheimer’s Association local board member, marathoner and passionate supporter of our mission who is turning every mile into meaningful impact.

Thomas’ family started noticing signs of the disease in his grandfather shortly after his grandmother passed. He had difficulty remembering names and everyday details. “After my grandfather passed, I began focusing more on my health and fitness,” Thomas shared.

Earlier this year, Thomas completed the Boston Marathon as a member of Team End ALZ, completing a journey that took him around the world — and earning the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star Medal. This honor represents the completion of all six major marathons: Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City.

Thomas didn’t always see himself as a runner. In fact, it all started when a friend encouraged him to try a 10K. What began as a challenge quickly became a life-changing realization about pushing beyond perceived limits. He carries this mindset into his fundraising efforts.

Thomas has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Alzheimer’s Association through Team End ALZ. His commitment extends beyond race day. As a member of his local chapter board, he dedicates his time and energy to advancing our mission and supporting others who have shared similar journeys.

While Thomas jokes that his grandfather might have been puzzled by the idea of running 26.2 miles for fun, he knows he would have felt immense pride. “I think he’d be proud that through all those marathons, I was able to raise funds to fight against the disease that he lived with.”

As our advocates meet with policymakers on Capitol Hill today, YOU can strengthen their message! Ask Congress to pass the bipartisan Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act. Together we can ensure early Alzheimer’s detection and diagnosis is the standard of care. bit.ly/4kKpmie
