Mountain laurel at Palmer Kendall Mountain Conservation Area. On a few shrubs, the buds have opened, but for the most part, they are just budded. It will be truly spectacular when they are in full-bloom, especially on the overlook trail.

Looks like a banner year for our native mountain laurel. Some of our conservation areas including Shafran, Palmer Kendall and King have mountain laurel. The red trail at Crandall Park also has a large grove. The next two weeks or so should be prime time.

The other day, I posted a photo of a tree struck by lightning at the Luce conservation area. Yesterday I noticed that about 40 feet away was a second tree with the same phenomenon. This created so many questions. I discovered that the lightning causes the moisture in the tree to boil and create steam which blows the strip of bark off the tree. On the first tree, the missing strip travels straight down the tree. On the second tree, it spiraled around the tree. Here’s a link describing this phenomenon. https://auf.isa-arbor.com/content/3/7/131.
And how did 2 trees 40ish feet apart both get struck? Looking at the canopy, their branches do in fact overlap, as I assume do their root systems.
