Question: Why was "14" selected as the John S Kountz Camp 14?

Continuity/History. The 14th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI) was drawn from Lucas County/Toledo. GAR Ford Post 14, also from Lucas County, followed that number. Finally, John S. Kountz Camp 14 carried on that tradition.

Yes, Ford Post 14 of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was likely numbered after the 14th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. It is a common practice for GAR posts to be named or numbered in honor of specific regiments that served during the Civil War.

In John S Kountz Camp 14 of the Department of Ohio, SUVCW, we benefit from the work of Brother Dan Masters. His work provides us with great insight into a period of American History is often glossed over. As a notable Civil War Historian, he brings to life in his writing the stories of the men who served.

It is worth noting that Dan has a blog that we can subscribe. The video below is courtesy of the CWRT Congress found on YouTube. Please do check it out!

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Billy Ray Branstutter, our first commander, of John S Kountz Camp 14. Billy moved from Kentucky to Toledo Ohio in late 2025. He was born in 1961. He sought membership in the SUVCW as part of newly established Camp 14. Billy was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. While he was never installed as Commander, he was voted in by the members of the Camp, but had taken ill before the Installation in April. Details abut his passing and any announcements as to burial have not been released. May he rest in God’s eternal Peace. Thank you Commander.
