📣 Started off on Cameo & Now Where Here! As we approach our Grand Opening it’s amazing to reflect back on the days things were just starting. A lot of positive words and encouragement came from a personal hero, Darren McCarty. I never thought we would ever meet and now after a few years; he’s a great friend!

Here’s a small flashback to the amazing man, human, friend, mentor, brother, the true great… Darren McCarty! Thank you for being a huge inspiration to Men Cry Too, MENtal HEALth Awareness For Men & Veterans

✍️ “The Memes Are More Than Memes” ✍️
💙 “I AM FAILING AT EVERYTHING” 💜

I’d wish it was just today…but it’s been this week, this month, this year…maybe even longer. But today I needed to doctor the doctor (and I say in context “doctor” merely to allude to the fact that by helping others; I know the questions to ask and how to analyze the responses…thus I know where the truth truly rests).

I had a small list of goals for today. I woke up telling myself “this is doable” … “I can do this”.

As the day turned; I finished one goal. And my mind started to attack me…I went to use the bathroom and I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I stopped and looked deep into my own eyes…

“Okay…today we are going to not lie to myself…ask the hard questions…answer them to the true root of my answers”. Now this doesn’t mean my answer in the moment is true…but it does mean it is how I see myself and what I am battling. It is how I see it…and even though it is me judging me; I may be wrong.

I pushed myself harder and harder to answer truthfully while am I so stuck? What about me life changes do I hate? Why am I struggling?

And I looked deep and first didn’t have an answer, than I had a sort of answer…but as the tears flew down my face…I screamed… I cried… and somewhere in between I let out “I AM FAILING AT EVERYTHING”.

“I AM FAILING AT EVERYTHING”

My eyes closed tight trying to hold the tears in…but the flood gates were broken. The tears poured out…in just a vast second I saw what I looked like in the mirror and the only image I can use to describe what I saw was Sally Field from Steel Magnolias in the cemetery after her daughter passed screaming “WHY NOT ME”…only I was screaming “WHY ME?”

I’ve always found an answer to this question. But today I was too tired to look for a profound statement of inspiration. I wanted a real answer. Not one I had created to help me be tougher. Today I wanted to just let it all out. No lies. No false hopes. Just let me scream. Let me be angry. Let me hate this. So that I could move on.

As the tears dried up the list grew of all the things I have failed at. Failed at keeping promises. Failed at doing what I need to do. Failed at so many things.

Yup…I tried to tell myself my successes. By today wasn’t the day for kind cheering up. The fails are all I could see. And I needed to see them. So that I stop making the same mistakes that cause me to fail.

Lower expectations. More assistance. Asking for more help.

But as anyone who knows mental health…we suck at asking for help. We don’t want to be an inconvenience to someone. You will tell us “you’re not an inconvenience” but than when we need something it’s usually “yeah… I’m busy today”…and you have that right. But in our mind…we are scared to ever ask again.

I have a dream of helping people. People who have hurt like me. But I need to make sure I am okay first.

I got on the phone with the psychiatrist and rambled for an hour. I think I have a plan. But the goal is to not have one that is written in stone. No promises. Low expectations until I build up my confidence.

I guess we shall see how “doctoring the doctor” really works.
