Tarrytown Fire Department

Tarrytown Fire Department All volunteer fire department, staffed 24 hours a day, 365days a year, by highly trained citizens of the Tarrytown Fire Protection District!

We are a 100% volunteer department, like the majority of the neighborhoods in Westchester. There is no time table or schedule; you respond when you wish to or when you can. You will know when you are needed as the Village Horn will sound with a specific number of blasts, additionally you may have a radio pager which send a tone followed by a voice message with details of the type of emergency, loc

ations and the units requested to respond. Any village of Tarrytown resident or resident of the Fire District, or person that spends their primarily working day in the Village, provided they are seventeen years old or over. One of the many benefits to becoming a member is the knowledge that you are providing a valuable service to the community in which you live. The Fire Department supplies your all Personal Protective Equipment, known as PPE, in house training including American Heart Association CPR, and OSHA training, and Firefighter I training at the Westchester County Fire Training Center in Valhalla. The Tarrytown Fire Department consists of six fire companies under the direction of the Chief Engineer, 1st Assistant Chief and 2nd Assistant Chief. In the absence of a Chief, a Deputy Chief or Line Officer will establish command at an incident. Each Company is run by its own Line and Administrative Officers. You can choose which companies you wish to volunteer for. Some things to consider when selecting which company to join:

Location - Where and when are you most likely to respond? From your home or work location in Tarrytown or the Tarrytown Fire Protection District (surrounding villages)? Meeting Nights - Companies have different schedules for their Meeting nights (you do not have to attend all meetings). Drill Nights - Companies have different schedules for their Meeting nights (you do not have to attend all drills). Specialization - Companies perform some specialized tasks due to the specific nature of the equipment that their apparatus carries.

The Department gathered last night for our annual Swearing in of the new officers and Chiefs. As we end Chief Derivan’s term, we can’t thank him enough for serving four terms as this Departments Chief Engineer. Pat has been an incredible leader, mentor and friend to many over the years. As Chief Derivan steps down from the spotlight, he will continue to work behind the scenes to further his dedication to his passion.

Stepping up to fill the role is Chief Raymond J. Tuohy.

Chief Tuohy has been a proud, dedicated and active member of the Tarrytown Fire Department since June 1997. He comes from a long and proud line of family who were and currently are career firefighters and is honored to serve his community in this capacity.

Chief Tuohy has a long record of training which has prepared him well for his role as chief of the department. His knowledge and training has placed safety in the forefront of his firefighting mission.

Chief Tuohy has held many positions within the Tarrytown Fire Department. These include lieutenant, captain, safety officer, warden, and driver. There have been some notable achievements in Chief Tuohy’s career. These include four lifesaving commendations. Twice, he was recognized as a member of a group that received Firefighter of the Year. Other commendations include service during the 911 tragedy; Hurricane Sandy; and unit citations. Most recently, Chief Tuohy received the Make the Difference Award from the Southern Westchester BOCES Center for Special Services. This award was his personal favorite as Chief Tuohy was recognized as being caring, patient and valuable in the lives of children with special needs.

Despite Chief Tuohy’s jovial side in life, at an emergency scene, he is calm, cool, collected, communicative and all business. Safety of the members and the community at large are paramount to him.

Chief Tuohy’s four main goals this year are:

1. safety to preserve the lives of firefighters, the public and property;
2. to ensure effective emergency response and reduce the risks in an inherently dangerous profession;
3. to encourage growth by enlisting more volunteers as a viable cost saving measure to the taxpayers of the Village Tarrytown; and
4. to continue in depth and involved department fire training.

Supporting Chief Tuohy and his vision are a pair of Hoyt’s. Yes, a father and son duo. Bobby Hoyt (2462) has been member of the department for more than 40 years and has served in every capacity in the department. While Bobby celebrated his own promotion, he was able to stand by proudly while he watched his son, Captain Justin Hoyt step see his own promotion to second assistant chief.

Captain Justin Hoyt of Consolidated Engine, Engine 77, has been a member of the department for over a decade. A highly qualified and regarded leader amongst the membership, Captain Hoyt has truly earned the opportunity to serve the department in this capacity. Justin is supported by his wife Melissa and their newborn daughter Tessa as well as enough eager babysitters to fill an NFL team.

And so it was, two Hoyts and a Tuohy ready to lead and keep things moving forward.

Best of luck to all of the Chiefs, Deputy Chiefs, and Firematic Line Officers of the department!

Someone say snow?!?

As you enjoy this upcoming storm, please take care of your local fire hydrant! Hydrants are essential and finding one after a possible 18 inches of snow is tough. Digging them out quickly in a situation where seconds count can be deadly.

Please help your neighbors and be safe out there!

Tarrytown Fire Department
Press Release – Bus Fire on the Tappan Zee Bridge

11/21/25

At approximately 1:39 PM, the Tarrytown Fire Department (TFD) was dispatched, along with the Central Nyack Fire Department, to a reported bus fire on the Tappan Zee Bridge. While en route, Car 2461 (Chief Derivan) observed a visible column of smoke rising from the bridge structure.

Due to limited water access on the upper deck of the bridge, Chief Derivan requested additional resources, including 13 Marine from Piermont, the TFD fire boat, and a tanker from Pocantico Hills.

Upon arrival, units encountered a well-involved charter bus fire, with flames originating from the rear compartment area. Fire crews from both Rockland and Westchester counties operated jointly and efficiently to bring the fire under control.

Units Operating:
• Unified Command: 2461 (Chief Derivan Sr.) and 2-3 (Chief Pascullo)
• Units: 2462, 2463, E77, E79, E80, R61, M5, Pocantico Hills FD, Piermont FD, Nyack FD, Central Nyack FD

We are pleased to report no injuries as a result of this incident. TFD extends its appreciation to all responding agencies for their coordinated and highly effective efforts.

An excellent combined operation by all personnel involved.

SCAM ALERT!

It was brought to our attention today that one of our residents was scammed by a fake account when they attempted to buy a parade shirt.

The only person selling the TFD parade shirts is Melissa Weaver (E-79). Currently there are about 25 XL shirts left total. No other sizes. I am sure Mel is happy to drop her email in the comments for you.

The TFD just wrapped an extremely challenging but rewarding weekend. Hosting the 119th WCVFA Convention events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Consolidated Engine and 125th anniversary of Riverside Hose has been an honor and privilege.

On behalf of the Parade Committee and Chief Derivan, our warmest thank you to all that supported, donated, took time, and sent well wishes. Our corporate sponsors, President Farrel, the Outhouse family, the Fritche Family, the Scarduzio family, and incoming President Marty Gunther- all deserve more praise than just a Facebook post. Alas, here we are!

Congrats to the Department, the Village of Tarrytown, our Firefighter of the Year recipients, our Grand Marshalls for being recognized for their achievements, and all of our volunteers. A special thank you to the parade committee for every hour of every day for nearly a year spent planning and prepping. Nothing went unnoticed!
