IMPORTANT NOTICE: New Asylum Fee Rules (USCIS)
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced new requirements related to the Annual Asylum Fee (AAF).
What you need to know:
If you have a pending asylum application, you are now required to pay an annual fee while your case is pending.
Consequences of not paying on time:
• If the fee is not paid within 30 days after notification,
USCIS may reject your asylum application
• If you do not have legal status,
removal (deportation) proceedings may be initiate.
• Additionally:
USCIS may deny any pending Form I-765 (work permit) based on the asylum case
If you already have a work permit, you may lose it automatically
Important Date:
These new rules go into effect on May 29, 2026
