It was the great pleasure of PSL Upstate to co-sponsor Gianni Notaro and the People's Classroom's lecture on the History of Palestine at Pita Dream in Syracuse on Friday night. Gianni took all of us through the history, human toll, and ramifications of the Zionist occupation of Palestine from before the Balfour Declaration to the current day. His brilliant and uncompromising perspective destroyed the iron wall of imperialist propaganda constructed to keep us from seeing the simple realities of the dispossession, oppression, and genocide of the Palestinian people. Most importantly, we learned about the indefatigable and righteous resistance of the nation of Palestine through it all. The erasure of the Palestinian people is the deliberate project of the same Western Imperialism whose capitalists ignited two world wars and who for centuries have pillaged the global majority across every hemisphere of the earth. Palestine's struggle against subjugation must inspire us to fight for a socialist future everywhere.

PSL deeply mourns the loss of Mark Cass, longtime Syracuse advocate and director of the North Side Learning Center. We had the distinct honor of participating in several NSLC programs and saw firsthand how Mark created a safe space for young people of all backgrounds but especially kids of immigrant and refugee status. Mark was the type of leader who made everyone feel welcome while simultaneously asking us to do better. We last saw Mark at a march for Palestine, not in the spotlight but showing up for the things that really mattered. The city of Syracuse simply will not be the same. Mark Cass ~ ¡Presente!

Join us as we demand accountability from the Salina town board, who voted more than a month ago to require operating permits on detention facilities within town limits (including the ICE office on Northern Concourse), but has yet to take action.

Town of Salina residents: Please sign up to speak in support of the resolution, and please sign the petition in support of building a task force to enforce it. If the town doesn't want to act, call their bluff and demand the task force! It's essential that we keep the pressure on.

Non-residents are welcome too! This issue affects all of us, so show the town of Salina that their neighbors demand action.

We will not rest until ICE terror is defeated, and neither should the Salina town board!

The town board already passed a resolution to enforce codes on this facility, and now we must hold them accountable.

Months of direct work with Supervisor Huerta by activists and concerned constituents paid off on Monday night, when a resolution requiring an operating permit for the detention facility in the Town of Salina passed. This vote is official, and this win is a victory for everyone working to hold ICE accountable for the conditions reported inside their 100 Northern Concourse facility.

But no one at the town board meeting that night could have anticipated Supervisor Huerta’s agonized and evasive response to the passage of the resolution. He had warned against it in his comments introducing it at the meeting, and when it won, he launched into an extended litany of what he claimed were disqualifying technicalities that rendered its passage “moot.” Huerta worked for months with activists and others on crafting the resolution, and never once in that time had he raised any of these intricate procedural concerns with them. Huerta even described the activists as having “forced him” to put the resolution on the agenda, but only wealthy interests would be capable of doing that. The only power the people have over their representatives is collective and democratic: the power of the truth.

Everywhere throughout the supervisor’s agitated commentary he describes the resolution inaccurately as a “local law,” which the resolution most certainly is not. All of the procedural requirements Huerta claims the resolution failed to meet only apply to laws, not to resolutions. These supposedly omitted requirements include a public comment period and consultation with state and county authorities. Neither of these things are required of town board resolutions. Never had the supervisor surfaced the $4 million price tag in any of the conversations he had held pertaining to the resolution with the activists involved, and he never explained how it was calculated or what it was for.

The struggle ahead will require as many of us as possible to see this resolution through to implementation. Salina town residents have the most power with the town board, and they should come to the next town board meeting on July 6 at 6:30 pm at 201 School Rd., Liverpool, NY.

Join our protest at 12pm today outside the Atrium (Salina Side) as we launch this effort against against JF Real Estate: This company owns the Oswego Border Patrol Station and profits from their support of ICE and CBP actions.

Together we demand that JF Real Estate cease their support of ICE and CBP, while we urge the Syracuse Common Council to pass the full Melt the Contracts resolution: To ensure that businesses that support ICE enforcement efforts are barred from entering into contracts with the city government.

Trans Liberation Now!

On Saturday, June 13th, PSL brought our socialist, pro-trans, pro-Palestine, and anti-war messaging to the over 22,000 people who came out to the CNY Pride Festival Parade in Syracuse, NY.

In the 57 years since the Stonewall Uprising in NYC, Pride has been co-opted and diluted by corporate interests and capitalism’s constant need to persecute and divide the working class. We march to remind the people that Pride means fighting for socialism on behalf of working class and oppressed people everywhere.

The first pride was a riot! We will not be quiet until Palestine is free, the US is out of everywhere, and LGBTQIA+ people can live lives without fear of persecution.
