Calling all birders! How many species can you identify?
🪺🐦‍⬛🪶🦉
According to the National Audubon Society, New York State is home to over 450 bird species. Long Island, specifically, serves as a critical staging area for migratory birds and as nurseries for vulnerable shorebirds. Muttontown Preserve—550 acres of meadows, forests, and vernal pools—attracts a variety of bird species due to its unique habitats, including birds of prey.

The Nassau County Soil & Water Conservation District worked with Hofstra University for their Arbor Day tree planting!

We planted a weeping ornamental peach, rhododendron, and viburnums. Hofstra University was named a Tree Campus USA in 2015. A Tree Campus is designated by the Arbor Day Foundation, a 501c (3) nonprofit conservation and education organization, to recognize current efforts to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees!

Hofstra’s 240-acre campus received official recognition as an Arboretum in 1985, with the University’s membership in the prestigious American Public Gardens Association, and is one of only 430 arboreta in the United States. Today, more than 12,000 evergreen and deciduous trees represent 625 species and varieties, and the number is increasing every year.

This course presents details of the New York State Erosion & Sediment Control Certificate Program to establish and maintain a process to identify and recognize individuals who are capable of developing, designing, inspecting, and maintaining erosion and sediment control plans on projects that disturb soils in New York State. Under the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s Stormwater Permit GP-0-15-002, all developers, contractors, and subcontractors must have at least one trained individual in their company.

The Nassau and Suffolk Soil and Water Conservation District’s held the annual Envirothon on Earth Day this year, April 22, 2026! 38 student teams navigated the campus, taking exams at Forestry, Aquatics, Wildlife, Soils, and Current Issue stations. The 2026 Current Issue was non-point source pollution — a relevant and growing threat to Long Island waterbodies. Students also delivered oral presentations about addressing non-point pollution, and on-the-ground solutions to mitigate pollutant loading and impact.

Congratulations to all of the winning teams from both counties! The overall winning team of the Envirothon has the opportunity to advance to the New York State Envirothon. 🏅🏆💧

Thank you to all of our sponsors, namely Reworld and Teachers Federal Credit Union , for their support, and the many volunteers who made this event happen.
