With Nassau County projected to spend over $5 billion this year, it is crucial that we prioritize transparency and accountability in our local government. Every Nassau County Legislature should possess legislative oversight powers including: the ability to investigate contracts; conduct public hearings; direct access to review all government spending; and audit programs and contractors.

Oversight is necessary because democracy depends on transparency, accountability, and an independent government that can investigate wrongdoing, protect the public interest, and ensure that no one is above the law.

"Fewer than 5% of the thousands of immigrants held in Nassau jail through County Executive Bruce Blakeman’s partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were convicted of violent crimes, a Newsday analysis found.

The findings — using ICE data obtained through a lawsuit by the Deportation Data Project and analyzed by Newsday — contradict President Donald Trump's marquee goal of rooting out the "worst of the worst." The share of local ICE detainees with violent convictions has not been reported until now."

Unbelievable conduct from Nassau's Republican leadership.

About 147 people had convictions for crimes ranging from misdemeanor and felony assault, robbery, and s*x offenses.
