The Reality of Keeping Volunteer Fire Departments Alive

I may be wrong, but I believe many citizens in our communities who are not directly involved with volunteer fire departments do not fully understand the tremendous stress, challenges, and sacrifices that firefighters and departments face every day just to keep their doors open, their lights on, and their trucks responding to emergencies.

Volunteer firefighters proudly serve and protect their neighbors, families, friends, and even travelers passing through our communities. When an emergency happens, people expect help to arrive quickly, and volunteer fire departments work tirelessly to make that happen. What many people don’t see are the countless hours spent training, maintaining equipment, fundraising, attending meetings, and managing the day-to-day operations that keep a department functioning.

Our departments rely heavily on funding from state and local governments, along with the generous support of local businesses and community members. We are incredibly grateful for every dollar donated and every act of support. Unfortunately, over the years, the cost of operating a fire department has continued to rise while funding has often remained the same—or in some cases, been reduced or eliminated altogether.

The expenses associated with running a fire department are substantial. Every firefighter must have properly fitted, up-to-date protective gear that meets current safety standards. Departments must purchase and maintain specialized tools, equipment, and apparatus capable of handling a wide variety of emergencies. Beyond that, departments face the same routine expenses as any home or business, including utilities such as electric, water, sewer, and phone service. Workers’ compensation insurance and other required expenses continue to increase, creating even more financial strain.

There is no single solution to these challenges, and no one person can fix them alone. However, if communities come together and work as one, there is hope for positive change. Supporting volunteer fire departments means investing in the safety and well-being of everyone in the community.

If smaller departments are forced to close because of inadequate funding or overwhelming expenses, the consequences will be felt by everyone. Emergency response times will increase, homeowners’ insurance rates may rise significantly, and the ability to protect lives and property could be greatly diminished.

Today, I am asking my friends, family, neighbors, and fellow citizens to help be a voice for volunteer fire departments across our state. Please consider supporting your local volunteer fire department through donations, fundraising events, or community advocacy. If you have ever considered becoming a volunteer firefighter, stop by your local department and learn how you can help make a difference.

Volunteer firefighting is more than a service—it’s a commitment to helping others during their most difficult moments. It demands sacrifice, dedication, and hard work, but it also creates a sense of purpose and family unlike anything else.

It truly is the toughest job you’ll ever love. ❤️🚒

Living up to the motto, “Training Today for the Calls of Tomorrow,” firefighters from across Braxton County gathered on Tuesday, June 9th, at the Days Hotel for the county’s monthly ladder truck training.

The training focused on aerial apparatus positioning, ground ladder deployment, & the safest methods for carrying tools while ascending & descending ladders.
These valuable hands-on exercises help ensure firefighters are prepared to safely & effectively respond when emergencies occur.

That training proved its value almost immediately, by Wednesday evening, when firefighters were dispatched to assist the Burnsville VFD with a fully involved structure fire.

Utilizing the county’s aerial apparatus, Ladder 871, along with firefighters from the Burnsville, Flatwoods & Sutton Volunteer Fire Departments worked together to bring the fire under control and prevent further extension to nearby exposures.

A total of 24 volunteer firefighters responded to the incident, demonstrating the importance of training, teamwork & mutual aid between neighboring departments.

The successful outcome serves as a reminder that the hours spent training are not just exercises—they are investments in the safety of our firefighters and the communities they serve.

We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the volunteer firefighters who tirelessly & selflessly organize, instruct, participate in & support these training opportunities.

Their dedication, commitment & willingness to serve ensure that help is always available when our community needs it most.

Thank you to every volunteer firefighter for your service, sacrifice & unwavering commitment to protecting the people of Braxton County and beyond.

From Parade Winner to Fireground Workhorse: Ladder 871 Answers the Call

Friday night was a proud one for the members of Braxton County as Braxton County Ladder 871 rolled through Webster Springs during the annual Fireman’s Parade at the Woodchoppers Festival and earned the award for Best Appearing Fire Apparatus.

The beautifully maintained truck drew attention from parade spectators and judges alike, representing the pride, dedication, and professionalism of the firefighters who keep it ready for service every day. Members proudly accepted the award during the festivities, celebrating the recognition alongside fellow firefighters and community members from across West Virginia.

But only a few hours after taking home the prize, Ladder 871 reminded everyone that it is far more than just a showpiece.

The same apparatus that stood shining in the parade lineup was quickly placed into action at a working house fire in Sutton. Ladder 871 responded and went straight to work on the fireground, supplying water to two portable deck guns and a handline operating on the Alpha side of the structure.

As heavy smoke and fire conditions intensified, the truck and its crew performed exactly as designed — delivering the water needed to support suppression efforts and protect surrounding exposures during the late-night blaze.

The contrast between the evening’s events perfectly captured the fire service mission: pride in appearance, professionalism in public, and readiness when the tones drop.

One moment, Ladder 871 was being admired under festival lights. Hours later, it was illuminated by emergency scene lighting and smoke while firefighters battled a dangerous structure fire.

Congratulations to the members of Braxton County Ladder 871 on the parade award — and thank you to all responding departments and firefighters for your continued service to the community.
