Statement on Dane County Land Purchase of approximately 165 acres in the Lower Mud Lake Natural Resource Area
Thursday night, I was the only Supervisor that voted against the proposed $6.41 million land purchase approved by the Dane County Board.
Let me be clear: my opposition is not rooted in disrespect toward the Ho-Chunk Nation, conservation efforts, or the importance of preserving culturally and environmentally significant land. I deeply respect the history of this land and the importance it holds.
However, as a County Board Supervisor, I also have a responsibility to weigh the financial realities facing Dane County residents today.
At a time when many families are struggling with increasing Property Taxes, rising housing costs, childcare expenses, public safety concerns, aging infrastructure, assisting municipalities, and growing pressure on county services, I could not justify supporting a multi-million-dollar purchase without broader public discussion and stronger financial justification.
Many residents across Dane County are asking difficult but fair questions about priorities, transparency, and long-term fiscal sustainability. I believe those concerns deserve to be taken seriously, not dismissed.
I support conservation. I support partnerships. I support responsible stewardship of our natural resources. But I also believe every major expenditure of taxpayer dollars must meet a high standard of public accountability, especially during uncertain budget conditions.
My vote reflects my commitment to fiscal responsibility, transparent government, and ensuring county decisions remain balanced and sustainable for all residents.
I respect my colleagues who voted differently, and I welcome continued dialogue on how Dane County can pursue conservation and cultural preservation in ways that also maintain public trust and financial prudence.
