New Senate Bill effecting Registered Offenders!
The State of Kansas has put a new bill into effect for Offender Registration.
SB487 makes some changes to Offender Registration.
This new Senate Bill adds an additional $10 fee to Offender Registrations. This goes into effect on July 1st, 2026.
This is in addition to the current $20 fee for a total of $30. The Sheriff's Office will keep the $20, the additional $10 will be submitted separately to the County Treasurer's Office for transfer to a special technology fund with the State. This fund is intended to allow the KBI to update the Offender Registration software to make our work easier for registrations.
In addition to the new fee, the bill removes the 15 day grace period previously allowed for paying for a registration. Instead of allowing the grace period, we may instead issue an NTA to anyone who fails to pay at the time of registration. If they pay within 20 days of the registration the NTA must then be dismissed.
The $10 fee is only to be charged if the offender resides in our county. We will not charge it if they only work or go to school in our county.
