In Hillview East Cemetery, formerly known as Hillview Annex, a section of rows of
matching markers sidles up to Bacon Street. This is section 8, one of the cemetery’s two lots set aside for the city’s indigent. The rows of concrete tabs are inscribed with a letter for the row and a number of the grave. The names can be found by consulting the city’s cemetery records. Burials were first conducted in this section in 1914, continuing until the early 1930s when Section 12 was opened for paupers as well.
The child buried in G-28 was killed when his parents’ home was demolished by the
tornado that struck LaGrange on the afternoon of Palm Sunday, 28 March 1920. The tornado was the second to hit Troup County as part of the Palm Sunday Outbreak as it is known. A tornado spawned by the system hit downtown West Point killing about 26 people after traveling through the Alabama countryside. Several hours later the system spawned a tornado that wrecked part of the southeast side of LaGrange including the Hillside Mill Village and the Swift Fertilizer Plant. An estimated 300 homes were severely damaged or destroyed by the winds. LaGrange has done a excellent job with maintaining the pauper cemetery in downtown.

Folks we at the Cemetery Research Group of Georgia always promote the maintaining of grave sites. Here is an excellent example of a family cleaning their grandparents grave in Meriwether County.
