What a whirlwind this has been!
In just 45 days, thousands of Payne County residents rallied across the county—signing petitions, volunteering their time, opening their businesses, and sparking conversations about the future of children and families in our community.
Today, we submitted our grand jury petition signatures to be certified.
Many have asked how the required number of signatures is determined.
Our constitution outlines that for us.
Article II, Section 18 establishes the grand jury petition process, and Article V, Section 5 provides the formula used to calculate the number of signatures required in each county. The formula is based on voter participation in the most recent gubernatorial election and was written to ensure citizens have equal access to this constitutional right regardless of the size of their county.
Because signatures must be reviewed and verified, we submitted a surplus of more than 2,000 signatures above the constitutional requirement to help account for any signatures that may not qualify during the review process.
We are incredibly grateful to every person who signed, every volunteer who collected signatures, every local business that opened its doors, and every community member who chose to engage in this process.
This effort has always been about creating a pathway to better understand what is working, what is not, and how we can build stronger systems that better protect children and support families.
But today is not the finish line.
In many ways, today is the beginning.
Collecting signatures was never the goal. Creating meaningful change is the goal. Strengthening trust is the goal. Identifying opportunities for improvement is the goal. Building a future where children and families are better served is the goal.
We are confident this will move forward and our commitment remains the same: to work together, seek the truth, learn from what we find, and advocate for solutions that make Payne County stronger for the next generation.
This community has demonstrated something powerful.
People from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives can come together when they believe our children deserve the very best we can offer.
Thank you, Payne County.
The signatures have been filed. The work of creating lasting change is just beginning.
