Eating healthy is challenging when you are always busy. Keep healthy snacks on hand, like trail mix and fruit, and avoid the fast food drive through. When eating out, look for places with a wide variety and choose healthier options, like baked potato instead of French fries, iced tea instead of soda, or pick up ready-meals at the grocery store and have a picnic.

Did you know that sunscreen can expire? Do you keep a tube of sunscreen in the car for convenience? Turns out, sunscreen needs to be stored in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight, and used before the expiration date, otherwise it loses its effectiveness to protect you from the UVA/B rays that can cause skin cancer.

The general recommendation is to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours through the day. There are also reasons why you might need to reapply even sooner than that. Swimming, sweating, and toweling dry can wash or rub off sunscreen even before the effectiveness wears off so make sure to reapply generously and often for your best protection against skin cancer.

You may have heard that if you see a skunk or raccoon outside during the day they are probably rabid. Did you know that especially in the spring and summer when they have young to feed, skunks and racoons may be out during the day finding extra food? But don’t panic because it is always good practice to leave wildlife alone no matter when or where you see them. If you are concerned the animal is behaving strangely, contact Colorado Parks & Wildlife: You can call the Brush office or any of the State Parks offices for information: cpw.state.co.us/contact-us.

In the spring and summer, you may encounter baby wildlife. They may appear to be abandoned, but usually a parent is nearby just waiting for you to leave. Baby animals are cute and look cuddly, but they can still bite or scratch. Did you know that if you get bitten or scratched that animal must be euthanized to be tested for rabies, even if they don’t appear sick? If you are concerned a wild animal baby may be in danger, contact Colorado Parks & Wildlife, or a licensed rehabber. Find a list at cpw.state.co.us/wildlife-rehabilitation-licenses.

Gardening has many health benefits. Besides the yummy food you can add to your healthy diet, gardening is a good form of exercise – working large muscle groups and improving balance and flexibility. Weeding, watering, and watching your own food grow also contributes to mental health.
