Last year, Penn State received its FIRST boost in state funding in nearly a decade. Our students had a lot to do with that.

Throughout the year, the students spent hours researching, developing messaging, and practicing their Penn State stories so they could effectively advocate to state leaders on the importance of state funding.

Lion Caucus students are ready to advocate!

Jude York, a third-year student from Garnet Valley, PA, leads the student advocacy organization this year in their efforts to speak up for their peers from Washington, D.C., to Harrisburg.

Here is what he said when we asked him why advocacy is so important:

As a lifelong resident of Pennsylvania, I advocate for Penn State because I see the incredible effects the university has on the commonwealth. Whether it’s providing education to over 89,000 students, adding thousands of Pennsylvania jobs, Penn State consistently enriches our state. I want to ensure our university continues to leave this impact while guaranteeing educational opportunities to as many students as possible.

Why Lion Caucus?

Lion Caucus was established because there was a need for student voices in the University’s engagement with governmental audiences at all levels.

“For almost a decade, Lion Caucus has helped us effectively engage legislators and advocate for funding and issues critical to Penn State,” said Mike Stefan, vice president for government and community relations. “They are a passionate and thoughtful group of students who bring an important student perspective to conversations with elected officials at the local, state and federal levels.”

New funding for Penn State puts our land-grant mission into action.

A recent $28.2 million award from the National Institutes of Health to the Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute supports innovative practices and work to address rural health challenges, reduce medical barriers, and bolster access to care for rural Pennsylvanians.

The award furthers Penn State’s mission of statewide impact through partnerships with 32 hospitals and more than 1,000 clinics and health centers, which provide care for over 5 million Pennsylvanians. That is almost 40% of the state’s population!

Partnerships like this demonstrate Penn State’s continued commitment to stand out as a leader in research and innovation.
