Had a wonderful time at Monroe's Juneteenth celebration today. It was great to see so many neighbors, community leaders, and friends, including Madeleine Byl for Union County Commissioner, who would be an outstanding public servant. Grateful for everyone who helped make today's celebration possible. Happy Juneteenth, Monroe!

Happy Loving Day, North Carolina!

Today is Loving Day, marking 59 years since the United States Supreme Court struck down all remaining state bans on in*******al marriage in the landmark case Loving v. Virginia.

My parents – a black man and a white woman – met in Missouri in the late 1950s. Because Missouri law prohibited them from marrying, they were forced to leave their home, families, and the community they knew to start a new life in Seattle, Washington.

Their story, and above all, the love and courage between them, is one of the reasons I chose to become a civil rights lawyer and later run for the North Carolina Supreme Court. On Loving Day, I am reminded that progress is not only made through court decisions, but also from the bravery of ordinary people who are determined to live, and love, freely.

Higher diesel prices don’t just break stretched thin household budgets of everyday North Carolinians. These costs make our state tax dollars not go as far. In normal circumstances, in a normal North Carolina, with normal diesel costs, and a state budget - we’d probably continue to operate this ferry service without issues. But, when everyday people pay more for diesel, so does our state. Enough is enough.

May 30, 2021. The best day ever.

Happy Anniversary to my husband and best friend, Harris! This is the best anniversary yet since now we have our daughter. It’s the greatest gift to know that you’re my partner for every day of “forever.”

I’m so lucky to have not just a supportive partner, but someone who actively encourages and takes on additional work for me to do what I love - public service. I love you more than words can describe. 💙

Under this proposed income tax cap to the North Carolina state constitution, if Elon Musk moved from Texas to North Carolina, the most he could pay in state income tax would be 3.5%. Democrats already don’t want everyday North Carolinians paying more in taxes. It just caps the ability of the state legislature to make sure that the ultra rich pay their fair share.
