Francois Bernier House

Francois Bernier House Authentic two story French vertical log house. This page is about restoring the historic property in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. Built by hand; saved by hand.

The house was burned in a fire in June 2010 and sat vacant until we purchased it in May 2013.

Hello. My name is Ed Moore. I did the work on the Francois Bernier House. This page goes back to the beginning of the burned French vertical log house that we saved. This is my comment after several friends and followers contacted us about the changes you see in the photo.

The fact that there’s almost no protection for some of the most precious houses in this country, (as recognized by the National Park Service), is ridiculous. What a slap in the face after city officials asked me to save it. Some aldermen were wanting to tear it down. John Stuppy stood on the front porch and thanked us for coming back to save it. He told us it was about to be demolished.

Elizabeth Sayad, of Les Amis in St. Louis, wanted to make Ste. Genevieve a UNESCO World Heritage Site. She came to the Francois Bernier House while I was working on it. Elizabeth worked for decades to bring recognition to the town but she died before Ste. Gen got the UNESCO designation. I was at her funeral.

Mesa Verde National Park is a World Heritage Site. (I have been there and have seen it.) That is how important this house is.

Others died trying to save these homes, too. The town continues to go backwards. So many people like us came and tried save these precious homes. They invested money and time because they knew it was special. Most get disgusted or just give up and leave. Shame on Ste. Genevieve. These words are not harsh enough to describe how I feel.

After years of advocacy by community members and with strong Congressional support, President Trump authorized the establishment of Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, when he signed the Energy and Natural Resources Act of 2017.

Blunt, Smith Announce Establishment of Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) and U.S. Representative Jason Smith (Mo.) today announced that U.S. Secretary of the Interior David L. Bernhardt has completed the final step to formally establish the Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park. Blunt and Smith led the legislation, which was signed into law in March 2018, to establish the Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park and designate it as a unit of the National Park System. This is the first National Historical Park to be established in Missouri.
In the photo: U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) and U.S. Representative Jason Smith (Mo.) at a ceremonial signing of the cooperative agreements in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., on August 31st, 2018. This marked the final statutory step needed to establish Ste. Genevieve as a national park.
“Today, Ste. Genevieve is taking its rightful place among our nation’s most historically and culturally significant destinations,” said Blunt. “Establishing Ste. Genevieve as part of the National Park System has been a years-long effort and we owe this success to all of the local residents who have worked tirelessly to preserve and share this unique part of our state and nation’s history. I’ve been proud to champion this effort in the Senate and I appreciate Secretary Bernhardt’s support for getting this done. I hope more Americans will be encouraged to visit our nation’s newest national park and experience firsthand what life was like in French colonial America.”
“So many people have worked so hard on this project for so long,” said Smith. “It was my great pleasure to lead the efforts in Congress along with Senator Blunt to establish this historic national park. I applaud the good folks of Ste. Genevieve for their vision to share their city’s rich history. Ste. Genevieve is a jewel in the 8th Congressional District and now, the world will surely come to know why as visitors discover its roots and the thriving community it is today.”
“The new Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park is another example of President Trump’s dedication to preserving our important national history for the benefit of present and future generations,” said Secretary Bernhardt. “This pre-Revolutionary War settlement along the banks of the Mississippi River provides a rich story of early French colonization, the increased British presence after the Louisiana Purchase and, later, German American settlers carving out a hard life on the American frontier.”
Blunt and Smith first introduced legislation to make Ste. Genevieve a national park in 2016.
The NPS released its final Ste. Genevieve Special Resource Study in May 2016, which found that portions of the Ste. Genevieve historic district met the criteria for inclusion in the National Park System. Blunt and Smith reintroduced the legislation in June 2017. It passed the House in February 2018 and the Senate in March 2018.
In May of this year, Missouri State Representative Dale Wright led the state legislative effort, along with State Senator Wayne Wallingford, to authorize state-owned historical homes in Ste. Genevieve to be placed under the direction of the National Park Service.
The village of Ste. Genevieve dates back to the early 1700s, making it Missouri’s oldest town. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960, also making it one of the oldest National Historic Landmark districts in the country. It is known for its centuries-old homes featuring unique French vertical log architecture.

Our time in the Francois Bernier House is winding down. Just a few nights remain for us as the caretakers for this amazing piece of history.

For some reason, this is the only photo taken of us together here. (Credit to Gabe Bullard and Carolina Hidalgo from National Geographic.) We are glad the logs are visible as a reminder of our privilege to save something so rare.

We hope the new caretakers understand their role for preserving history, too. ⚜️

We were so proud to witness this yesterday. Certainly, Francois would have been, too. ⚜️
