North Tech Firefighting and Law Enforcement students stood side by side this morning in remembrance of the lives of first responders and civilians lost on September 11, 2001. Students marched in uniform, observed a moment of silence, and completed 55 flights of stairs in full gear while carrying weighted bags and the name of a fallen first responder.

Twenty-five years later, these students are preparing for careers built around public safety and service, and today they honored those who came before them.

A well-deserved surprise for an extraordinary educator! 🎉👏

Danielle Willhite, SSD Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) teacher at Parkway Northeast Middle School, was recently surprised with the Edward and Esther Haywood Caring Education Award. Presented by the Charles E. Fleming Legacy Foundation, the award recognizes educators who demonstrate extraordinary care for their students, families, and colleagues.

Nominated by SSD DHH interpreter Jim Walsh, Danielle was recognized for her commitment to building connections and supporting DHH students. For Danielle, the most meaningful part of her work is helping students discover their own potential: “There is something really special about watching students recognize what they are capable of and start believing in themselves.”

Through their expertise, care, and individualized support, our physical therapists help students build the mobility, strength, and skills they need to participate more fully in learning and their school communities. Their collaboration with educators, families, and school teams helps remove barriers while building greater access, confidence, and independence for students.

Mollie, an adapted physical education (APE) teacher serving students in Parkway Schools, has been named the 2026 MOSHAPE Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year!

Mollie works alongside students, PE teachers, paraprofessionals, and school teams to ensure students of all abilities can meaningfully participate in physical education. From finding the right modifications and equipment to helping students build skills and independence, her focus is making sure every student feels seen, included, and part of the experience.

Across SSD, students spent the week settling into routines, reconnecting with familiar faces, building new relationships, and getting back to learning. From our schools to classrooms throughout St. Louis County, it was exciting to see students engaged, exploring, and starting the year strong.

Meetings are open to the public, and all are welcome. PAC is comprised of families advising and collaborating to improve the education, confidence, and social outcomes of each student served by SSD.
