St. Louis County Parks and Recreation received a report of an invasive hammerhead worm in Cliff Cave Park. Hammerhead worms can cause damage to our environment and are toxic to people and pets if eaten. Touching them with bare hands can also cause skin irritation.

What to know:
• Usually seen after heavy rains; they hide under logs, rocks, and leaf litter.
• They can regenerate, meaning if you cut one into pieces, each piece can become a new worm.

What to do if you spot one:
• Do not handle the worm with bare hands.
• Avoid cutting them.
• To safely euthanize a hammerhead worm:
– Wear gloves or use a shovel to place the worm in a sealed plastic bag.
– Add vinegar, rubbing alcohol, salt, or soapy water to the bag, or place the sealed bag in the freezer for 48 hours.
– Dispose of the sealed bag in the trash.

Dr. Kanika Cunningham was pleased to participate in Senator Angela Walton Mosley’s Disaster Preparedness Community Forum this weekend at UMSL.

The event brought together public health, emergency management, and community leaders to discuss preparedness strategies that help protect families and strengthen community resilience during emergencies and disasters.

Saint Louis County Public Health is proud to work alongside local, state, and community partners to ensure residents have the resources and information they need to stay safe and prepared.

A proclamation declaring June 4, 2026 to be Lieutenant General Russel L. Honoré (Ret.) Day was also presented. LTG Honoré honorably served the United States Army for 37 years, earning numerous military decorations and becoming nationally recognized for his leadership and coordination of disaster response operations across the U.S. After retiring from military service, he became a national voice for disaster preparedness, emergency management, climate resilience, infrastructure protection, and public leadership, continuing his lifelong mission of serving and protecting communities.
