Mary Johnson - Neighbor and Advocate for Ward 6

Mary Johnson - Neighbor and Advocate for Ward 6 I’m Mary and together, we can make Ward 6 in Springfield a safer, cleaner, and healthier place for all through professionalism, passion, and hard work.

Community • Integrity • Leadership Springfield isn’t just where I live—it’s where I’ve built a life, a family, and a community that I cherish. From the moment my husband and I moved into our home in Forest Park, neighbors welcomed us with open arms, reminding us why this city is so special. Now, I want to give back to the people who make this place feel like home. For over a decade, I have stood o

n the front lines of justice, fighting for fairness, dignity, and opportunity for all. As an attorney and advocate, I’ve worked tirelessly to uplift families struggling to keep their homes, immigrants seeking safety, and workers demanding fair treatment. Now, I am ready to bring my passion, experience, and determination to Ward 6 as your next City Councilor.

My Ward 6 neighbors: when sidewalks are clean, when our parks are inviting, when we take pride in the small details, we build neighborhoods that feel like home.

Over the years I’ve seen too many corners of Ward 6 where litter, broken fixtures, or unclear recycling rules weigh on families. That’s why I’m committed to working with city services and local volunteers to make sure our streets stay clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.

If you’ve got ideas about how to keep your block looking its best - a cleanup crew, better bins, wider recycling access - I’d love to hear from you. Let’s keep building the kind of community we’re proud to live in. 💙

🗣️ Too many families and small businesses in Springfield feel like their voices aren’t being heard. 🏛️

I hear it every day, neighbors struggling with rising costs, small business owners doing everything they can to keep their doors open, and families who just want their concerns taken seriously.

I’m Mary Johnson, and I believe City Hall should listen to everyone, not just the loudest or most powerful. When we lift up real voices from Ward 6, we build a Springfield that works for all of us.

Let’s bring your ideas, your concerns, and your stories into every decision that shapes our city. 💙

🏡 When families can afford to stay in their homes, neighborhoods stay strong.

I’ve seen how much pride Springfield families take in their homes and in each other. However, too many people are feeling the pressure of higher costs between repairs, bills and tough choices.

I believe that when we help families stay rooted, our whole community thrives: safer streets, closer neighbors, and a stronger Springfield for everyone. 💙

Honored to be at a Candidates Night this evening at Forest Park Library! Why am I the right person the voluntary PILOT agreements in Springfield?
The payment-in-lieu-of-taxes or PILOT agreements could bring in -in a conservative estimate- $10 million, but tax-exempt organizations in Springfield do NOT have to enter into them. They are entirely voluntary. So, how do we get this to bring money into the City? There are no regulations or laws to hold their feet to the fire. This project needs collaborative and relationship-building techniques.

Unfortunately, the main technique of the current City Councilor of Ward 6 is to punish residents. He wants people to pay higher fines, and he wants the police to arrest small business owners who had never even been charged with a crime. These tactics simply won’t work with our tax-exempt organizations like hospitals and colleges who are our community partners. We need someone who builds community, negotiates, and fosters strong relationships with our City partners. This is what I do every day as an attorney, and I am excited to bring these skills to City Council to benefit all residents and explore -with full transparency- the PILOT programs in Springfield.
