Mayor Sarno states, “I want to thank Judy Matt and her incredible Spirit of Springfield team, and all of our benefactors, sponsors and supporters for their efforts and generous contributions to our heartfelt and respectful monument to honor all of the brave and dedicated first responders and civilians that lost their lives on that fateful day. My administration is proud to have supported this endeavor to honor their memory and legacy of sacrifice. This special book will document what went into securing this important piece of our nation’s history for preservation, the creation of the monument to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice trying to save lives, the redevelopment of our Riverside Park, and the dedication ceremony with the numerous public safety officials and delegates in attendance, including Andrew Card, former Chief of Staff for President George Bush.”

Mayor Sarno Visits with Students from Mary A. Dryden Veterans Memorial School
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno visited students at Mary A. Dryden Veterans Memorial School as part of their career day where parents and special guests visited to talk about their jobs and careers. Mayor Sarno shared his background with students and what it’s like serving as Mayor for the City of Springfield.
Mayor Sarno stated, “what a great group of students at our Mary Dryden School. Some were dressed up as what they want to be when they grow up and we had a great time talking about our city and how important education and staying in school is to achieve their dreams. I often remind them that I once sat right where they sit when I was a Springfield public schools’ student back at White Street Elementary School. I do this because it is important to remember, and for our students to realize, they are our future leaders. The future leaders of our city, our state, our country, and future world leaders are sitting in our Springfield classrooms right now, learning and growing and coming together to solve problems. I was honored to be part of their career day and truly appreciate the very thoughtful questions from the students. I am also very proud of our teachers and school staff for their dedication to teaching our future leaders. Thank you to Principal Theresa Carrie and Counselor Lisa Jones for welcoming and inviting me today. Keep up the excellent work!”

Mayor Sarno and Councilor Click-Bruce Join with Williams Family for Unveiling of Honorary Street Sign in Honor of George ‘Big Will’ Williams

Mayor Sarno states, “I was more than happy to work with my former aide, now City Councilor Lavar Click-Bruce, aka ‘Coach’, on this most deserved honor for the legendary Coach George ‘Big Will’ Williams. I played a few hoop games in ‘Death Valley’ the old Dunbar Community Center and I’ll tell you what, you were down 10-points before the game ever started. Coach Big Will taught and mentored many young ball players not only on the court, but just as importantly off the court too. You are sorely missed, but your legacy lives on through such individuals as Coach Lavar Click-Bruce, with your ‘tough love’ life lessons.”

Mayor Sarno and Officials attend Groundbreaking of Panera Bread Restaurant

Mayor Sarno states, “My administration is proud to support and facilitate another first for our Springfield, as this is Panera Breads first Springfield location. This new fast casual restaurant, located where the former Albano’s Market and Bob Weiner Tire used to stand, will create around 35 to 40 jobs and offer their famous soups, sandwiches and salads, while complementing our South End amenities and being conducive to the neighborhood. Along with the abutting Starbucks and Burger King, and the new 40 home-ownership townhouse development project that we announced yesterday, our South End neighborhood is alive and thriving.”

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and the Springfield Police Department partnered with Sheriff Nick Cocchi and the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department to hold a gun buy-back program on Saturday, October 21st at the Raymond M. Sullivan Safety Complex. Over 100 fi****ms were turned in.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states, “I want to thank Sheriff Nick Cocchi, Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood and their respective teams for coordinating this great initiative. This program is another proactive outreach initiative that came out of my administration’s roundtable discussions with community stakeholders and partners to create meaningful initiatives and programs to curb the increase of gun violence in our community. These gun buyback programs have been very successful in the past and we expect this one to be just as successful. Any endeavor that helps take guns off our streets and out of our neighborhoods is important, as this is one less gun that could be potentially stole or misused. Sadly, and tragically, we’ve seen guns falling into the wrong hands. Fi****ms are not toys and this is not a movie, TV show or a video game, where individuals come back in a recurring role, this is real life. Which is why this gun-buy back event is so important. It can help individuals and families remove unwanted fi****ms they may have come into possession with, such as inheriting one from a loved one who may have passed.”
