Everyone should have a plan to shelter indoors when AQI is 150+ (the red category), but did you know that children, adults over age 65, people with asthma or respiratory and heart conditions, pregnant people, and others at higher risk from smoke should stay indoors when AQI is over 100 (unhealthy for Sensitive Groups/in the Orange category)? Everyone benefits from spending time in a cleaner air space, but wildfire smoke is especially harmful for people in “sensitive groups” or adults over age 65, children under age 18, people that are pregnant, and for people living with respiratory conditions, heart conditions, and other chronic health issues.

Follow these simple steps to set up a Cleaner Air Room in your home.
1. Choose the right room
2. Keep smoke and outside air out
3. Filter the air with a HEPA air cleaner or DIY Box fan air cleaner.
4. Keep inside air cool with fans or AC that recirculates indoor air
5. Avoid creating air pollution by burning candles, vacuuming, using aerosol sprays, or gas stoves
6. Hang out in your Cleaner Air Room until the AQI falls below 100

Smoke isn’t always visible. Check the Air Quality Index.
If you're pregnant, over 65, or living with a chronic health condition, an AQI over 100 could put your health at risk even when it isn’t visibly smoky.

Everyone should stay inside when the AQI hits 150+, but if you’re pregnant, over 65, have asthma, or other chronic health conditions, it’s safer to stay indoors when it’s over 100.
