The South Dakota State Fraternal Order of Police is heartbroken for the Moody County Sheriff’s Office. Details are few; a Deputy Sheriff was killed in the line of duty today. Our prayers are with his family and co-workers.

Yesterday Pierce County Sheriff's Department lost a deputy. They shared an old video to their page of fallen officer Deputy Calata reading a picture book in his patrol car as part of their “Storytime with a Sheriff” series. As I watched this young man who has a small child at home read to the camera, I felt my heart sink and my stomach drop. His kiddo will have this clip of their daddy reading a story to watch forever. What a priceless gift! But..that’s all they’ll have. That, some photos, the memories that they’ve made and the ones that will be shared with them by those who loved their father.

And I can’t help but think…should we do that too? Should I film my own officer reading a book, in case we lose him, too? Should I be more diligent about recording moments and memories? I already try to always take an extra second to hug and kiss my officer goodbye before he heads off into the night for patrol. Am I always squeezing him extra tightly like I should? Am I always cherishing that time together as the last that it could be?

I love being intentional with my officer and my family…but I can’t help but think, the reason behind it shouldn’t have to be there. We shouldn’t have to lose young heroes who have families waiting for them at home. We shouldn’t have to make videos for our children to watch in case their parent never again gets the chance to tuck them in, read them a story, or say I love you. We shouldn’t have to treat each hug and each smooch like they could be the last.

But it is that way, and we do. We make contingency plans, keep updated wills and end of watch packets, treasure photos of our family, and linger outside patrol car windows just a little bit longer.

We, as blue line families, know all too well that every shift could be the last. And so we hold our families a little bit tighter, love a little deeper, and pray a little stronger.

And we weep for every law enforcement officer lost and mourn along their families, feeling the wound just a little bit deeper in our souls 💙

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | 18 MAY 2021

🔺 Statement from National FOP President on Involvement in Police Reform Discussions 🔺

Recent media reports regarding an internal AFL-CIO document have been misconstrued as claims or insinuations that the Fraternal Order of Police is excluded or not involved in national discussions on police reform. Nothing could be further from the truth. With a long history of working with leaders on both sides of the aisle, the FOP is fully engaged in this critical effort and is in virtually daily contact with Congressional negotiators, the White House, the Department of Justice, and other major law enforcement groups.

The FOP is the largest law enforcement labor organization in the country, with more than 356,000 members, and we have made clear time and time again our willingness to engage with anyone interested in having fact-based discussions about how to improve policing in our country.

The AFL-CIO, which again, produced an internal document for the use of their own members, would not have any way of knowing the extent to which the FOP is involved in this national discussion because they have not been and are not privy to these conversations.

The FOP will continue to work in a collaborative way with the Administration, Congress, affected Cabinet agencies, and others to craft criminal justice reform legislation which will make this country a safer and fairer place for all its citizens, and for the law enforcement officers sworn to protect them.

Our First Amendment freedoms are among our most sacred. The men and women in law enforcement will make every effort to protect and defend those protesting or demonstrating peacefully. We will keep you safe while you make your voices heard. That said, violence and destruction drown out these peaceful voices and does nothing to help our communities.

“Boulder Officer [Eric Talley] has lost his life running towards the gunfire of an active shooter. No words can adequately capture the heroism exhibited. Keep him in your prayers.

Police Officers don’t ‘deserve’ your respect, because no one ‘deserves’ anything, but we damn sure earn it everyday!”

— Joe Gamaldi National FOP VP
