Today was another busy day for Spartanburg County Emergency Management and Special Operations.

The morning started with HazMat/Special Operations responding to a diesel fuel spill, while Emergency Management and Special Operations also participated in the quarterly LEPC meeting.

At today’s LEPC meeting, we had four great presentations focused on CRG Mapping capabilities, Henkel’s partnership with Izzie's Pond, a progress report from the Spartanburg County Long Term Recovery Group, and a quarterly HazMat report highlighting their robust training efforts and recent response activity.

Following the meeting, attendees enjoyed a free lunch provided by NorthMark before everyone returned to normal operations.

Tonight, we (SCSAR - Search and Rescue Team) continue with Day 2 of Wilderness First Aid training. Last night, we also completed the first of two monthly mock searches, continuing to test our drone equipment, tethers, command bus, communications, and overall search capabilities.

Another exciting part of last night’s mock search was the start of what we hope will be numerous video reels. One of our five summer interns is helping us make our social media more engaging and appealing to a younger generation.

Soon, we also hope to spotlight the five interns joining us this summer thanks to OneSpartanburg, Inc.

To everyone who helps us keep this pace going, thank you!

A huge thank you to our Special Operations Division, Emergency Management Division, Emergency Services Academy Division, and Spartanburg County Community Emergency Response Team members who had a very busy weekend assisting with the following:

Saturday – Helene Recovery Preparedness Day

This event served 208 families severely impacted by Hurricane Helene. Attendees received children’s items, quilts, first aid supplies, shoes, preparedness information, weather radios, and much more.

The event was organized by the Spartanburg County Long Term Recovery Group, with 30+ Spartanburg County Community Emergency Response Team members assisting on the day of the event and many others helping with Thursday and Friday preparation.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this possible, especially Lutheran Church Charities, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs, Resurrection Lutheran Church of Spartanburg County, SC and Lutheran Servants for Christ. This was truly a great team effort and a wonderful way to support those impacted by Helene.

Sunday – Fire Rehab Response

On Sunday our Special Operations HazMat Team responded to a lithium ion battery fire at a locak warehouse in conjunection with numerous fire department. The Emergency Management Division provided Rehab91 during this response with numerous CERT Team members assisting. CERT91 also responded to this event and worked in conjunction with Spartanburg EMS to offer medicl support. This was another great team effort, led by North Spartanburg Fire Department and our very own Special Operations/HazMat Team.

Great job by all involved! In addition, thank you to Joel Lynn with the Emergency Services Academy for bringing the large fan to support this response effort.

This week is already shaping up to be another busy one. We have Rookie School starting at ESA, Wilderness First Aid classes in the evenings, an SCSAR - Search and Rescue Team mock search tomorrow, five interns onboarding with Emergency Management, LERT teams continuing Helene debris work this week, our LEPC meeting on Wednesday, hosting the Fire Chiefs meeting on Thursday, and whatever else may come our way.

To everyone who helps us make an impact in our community/region, we thank you!

We are aware that some residents outside the 1/2-mile evacuation area received the Wireless Emergency Alert for the evacuation notification.

After the alert was sent, we contacted FEMA-IPAWS/WEA for review. They advised that there were no errors with the message. In summary, their explanation was that WEA alerts are distributed through cellular networks, and some “overshoot” can occur based on cell tower coverage, phone settings, whether location services are enabled, older devices, and whether a phone supports device-based geo-fencing.

Alerts received well outside the intended area may occur for similar reasons, including “boomer” cell towers that reach phones outside the targeted area, phones with location services disabled, or devices that are not equipped to process device-based geo-fencing.

The evacuation area remains based on the shaded area shown on the attached map: If you are uncertain whether you are in this shaded area then please click on the following link: https://sartopo.com/m/JU2JR1J, search for your address and if you are outside of the shaded evacuation area, there is no need to evacuate.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.

Natural gas leak: If you are within the 1/2-mile radius shown on the map, please calmly evacuate now.

Avoid flames, sparks, smoking, or anything that could ignite gas near the leak. Use a safe route, keep roads clear for responders, and call 911 if you smell gas or need emergency assistance.

To check whether you are inside the evacuation area, visit:
https://sartopo.com/m/JU2JR1J

Once the map opens, type your address in the top search bar where it says “Enter Address.” If your address falls inside the shaded evacuation area, evacuate now. If you are outside the shaded area, there is no need to evacuate at this time.
