South Carolina may be heading to a new Congressional map—and the debate is heating up.

The top picture is the newly proposed map and the bottom is the current.

The redistricting ruling came from the US Supreme Court decision that happened recently in Louisiana. I have copied the 92 page document below for your review. I will provide my summary of the ruling below for you.

https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25pdf/24-109_21o3.pdf

Louisiana vs Callais (2026) ruled that Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act does NOT require states to draw districts based on race. Thereby race cannot be used as a factor in drawing unless there is a very strong and data driven fact that intentional discrimination is involved.

It gets significantly more in the legal weeds than this but this is a working understanding. This is where our lawyer friends can chime in 🙂

Now, the controversy for SC is what to do with Jim Clyburn’s 6th Congressional District? There are two arguments that have valid reasons that are debatable. I will lay both of them below for your review.

1. One side says we should do everything in our power to get Clyburn out by the re-drawing process. Since his district is heavily race favored it is now in potential violation of the Supreme Court ruling. They say with District 6 split up into other districts this will give the Republicans the edge to have a clean slate.

2. Another side states we should proceed with caution breaking up District 6 because quite simply “Clyburn’s voters got to go somewhere.” With a scenario of the Democrats picking up another Congressional seat or two.

The Republican Caucus FB page has a graphic that has the proposed map pictured above with Republicans in double digit leads in the new proposed districts.

In my opinion, the GOP needs to make sure the latest voter data and trends are considered carefully with consistent district lines. If carelessness is the leading factor then the unfortunate result will be a loss and not a win for the South Carolina Republicans.

Keep your mind open, let this be a data driven decision for our Legislators as they carefully consider redrawing our districts.

Feel free to comment what your view is on this issue.
