Our final innovator that we would like to share about is Lonnie Johnson. He grew up in Mobile, AL and in high school he represented his school at the statewide science fair. Lonnie was the only black student there, and he showcased his robot, 'Linnex', which was powered by compressed air. He took home first place for that project! Lonnie was always interested in engineering, and thus attended Tuskegee University, obtaining a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1973 and a master's degree in nuclear engineering in 1975.

After college, Johnson went to work for the U.S. Air Force, where he worked on the stealth bomber program, followed by a career at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Lonnie's innovation, the Super Soaker, was fist conceived while doing work for the Air Force. After more tweaks being made, Lonnie changed from water to Nerf projectiles, making the iconic Nerf Toys!

Johnson currently holds over 250 patents, most of which are for his Super Soaker. Johnson was awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal. He received several awards from NASA for his work in spacecraft system design at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Valerie Thomas was a data scientist that also invented an illusion transmitter. This invention uses two parabolic mirrors to transmit 3-D illusions of an object by use of a camera trained on the first mirror, which then sends video signals to a projector aimed at the second mirror. She worked for NASA, so this invention helped to send 3-D images across a distance, as though they were in front of the mirror. This technology is still used by NASA, along with other adaptations for TV, video screens and surgery!

Valerie attended Morgan State University and was one of two women studying physics. She started to work for NASA in 1964 where she developed real-time computer data systems to support satellite operation control centers and oversaw the creation of the Landsat program, which allows us to receive visualizations of Earth from Space. Thomas has also received numerous awards including the Goddard Space Flight Center Award of Merit and the NASA Equal Opportunity Medal.

Katherine Johnson was a human computer whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights! She worked at NASA for 33 years and was known for her amazing ability to solve complex calculations which included trajectories, launch windows and emergency return paths.

Katherine was an overcomer, as the county she grew up in did not provide education for African-Americans past the 8th grade. Her parents arranger for Katherine and her siblings to attend high school further away on the campus of West Virginia State College. She graduated summa cm laude in 1937, with degrees in mathematics and French, at age 18.

Katherine's accomplishments did not go unnoticed, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2015), Silver Snoopy award (2016), NASA Group Achievement Award (2016) and Congressional Gold Medal (2019). You may be familiar with her story due to the popular movie, Hidden Figures, where Katherine and other female African-American computers are portrayed.

This Black History Month, Square One Education Network is proud to celebrate Black innovators in STEM whose curiosity, courage, and creativity changed the world!

Our first highlight is Dr. Mark Dean, who was an innovator and computer engineer. He grew up in Tennessee and would tinker with things from a young age, even building a tractor from scratch with his father. After graduating with a degree of electrical engineering, he worked for IBM. Dean is the first African-American to become an IBM Fellow, which is the highest level of technical excellence at the company.

Dr. Mark Dean holds more than 20 patents for his work in helping to create the color PC monitor, ISA bus, and the IBM personal computer. Through these achievements, he has been inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, National Academy of Engineering and April 25th in Knox County, Tennessee is known as Mark Dean Day!

Over 60 students from EF Rittmueller MS, Breckenridge HS, Kingston HS, Reese MS/HS, St Louis HS and M.A.L.C came out for our Mini IVD Mid-Season Fun Run! This is one of their first chances of racing before the big IVD day at Kettering University on May 8th! Thank you to our host, Limitless R/C, for a great day of racing and for live streaming the final race.
