The Town of Southborough Department of Public Works is pleased to announce that the Town has been awarded approximately $3.89 million in construction funding through the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Community Culvert Grant Program for the Willow Street Culvert Replacement Project. The award was announced as part of MassDOT’s inaugural Fully Integrated Application (FIA) grant program.

The Willow Street project will replace two failing culverts located near Route 9 and Route 30 that have experienced repeated flooding, roadway overtopping, and embankment failures during significant storm events. The roadway has been forced to close on multiple occasions due to flooding conditions, impacting residents, businesses, school transportation, and emergency response access in the area. The project will improve roadway resiliency, public safety, drainage capacity, and stream continuity while reducing the risk of future roadway washouts and closures. The replacement structures are designed to meet modern hydraulic and environmental standards and will improve the ecological connectivity of the stream corridor. As part of the project, the Town previously secured Town Meeting support for funding associated with the Willow Street culvert improvements and associated easements needed for construction.

The DPW would like to thank MassDOT, the Select Board, Town Meeting, the Town’s consultants, and residents for their support throughout the development of this important infrastructure project.
Additional project updates and anticipated construction schedules will be provided as the project advances toward construction.
