Hi friends,
For those of you who still follow me and live in the First Congressional District in Connecticut, there is a Democrat Primary fast-approaching on August 11th (unless you early voted already)!
Before Election Day, I wanted to share why I'm supporting Luke Bronin for Congress. I recently wrote the following, and I hope you'll take a moment to read it:
At 24 years old, I should be focused on building my future. Instead, like many young people across Connecticut, I find myself wondering whether I can afford one here at all.
My generation entered adulthood during a period of extraordinary economic uncertainty. Many of my peers believe they will never be able to own a home. Some can’t afford to go to the doctor for basic check-ups, and the cost of groceries, rent, and transportation continues to skyrocket, all through no fault of our own.
Even those with good jobs often find themselves delaying personal life milestones our parents took for granted, such as moving out, buying a home, getting married, or starting a family.
So when we talk about affordability as just another issue, for us, it is the main issue.
That is why I'm supporting Luke Bronin for Congress. Luke has spent his career confronting affordability instead of talking around it.
As mayor of Hartford, he helped create the conditions for more housing by increasing housing permits and encouraging new investment. He paved the way for the e-scooter program to allow residents an affordable alternative to travel through the city. He also created the Hartford Youth Service Corps in his first year in office, creating opportunities for employment and workforce development.
His past record isn’t the only reason for my support. Luke understands what’s at stake if we fail to address the cost of living.
Rising youth unemployment, home prices, energy prices, and related issues are serious problems that require a clear and pragmatic vision. His approach is to bring down costs across the board – to make housing easier to build, health care more affordable, electricity more reliable and less expensive, and the tax code fairer so that working families are not carrying more than their share.
What I appreciate most about Luke’s approach is that he has the ability to connect with people on these issues in ways I have not seen before.
You see him at doors, events, and town halls all over Hartford and the rest of the district, talking to people in a way that feels familiar and genuine, like someone who is part of the same community and understands the same day-to-day realities many of us face across the district – that we cannot afford it.
At the end of the day, Luke has a track record of getting projects done and delivering for communities. He has a willingness to tackle difficult problems rather than just avoiding them. That is the kind of personable leadership we need in Washington at this time.
If we fail to confront the affordability crisis now, many young Americans who will inherit this economy will truly believe the American Dream was never meant for them in the first place. I refuse to accept that for my generation, and with leaders like Luke, I believe we can still build something better.
On August 11, I hope you will join me in voting for Luke Bronin for Congress in Connecticut’s 1st Congressional District.
