This morning, DAC’s Director of Community Impact, Emma Sanders, had the opportunity to partner with the Holly Hill Police Department to provide training for law enforcement professionals at Sica Hall.
The conversation focused on strengthening the response to domestic violence through building empathy for victims, understanding repeat calls for service, recognizing victims’ coping and survival mechanisms, documenting and assessing patterns of abuse rather than viewing incidents in isolation, updates related to HB 277, and the importance of lethality risk assessments when responding to domestic violence calls.
We were also in great company alongside fellow presenters Dr. Trish Giaccone, CEO of Family Life Center, and Lily Efird, Domestic Violence Investigator with the State Attorney’s Office.
Effective responses to domestic violence require more than responding to what happened in one moment. They require understanding the pattern, context, risk, and barriers that may impact a victim’s decisions and safety.
DAC is grateful for opportunities to work alongside law enforcement and community partners to strengthen our collective response to domestic and sexual violence. Education, collaboration, and informed intervention can save lives. 💜

September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month, and campus safety is about more than locked doors, emergency alerts, and well-lit walkways. It also means recognizing dating violence, stalking, coercive control, harassment, and other behaviors that can make someone feel unsafe.
Students, faculty, staff, friends, and family all have a role in creating safer campus communities. Learn the warning signs. Check on your people. Believe someone when they tell you they feel unsafe. Know where to turn for help.
And remember: you do not have to be in crisis to call DAC. Our advocates can help with safety planning, questions about warning signs, support after an incident, and connection to local services.

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, in partnership with the City of Daytona Beach, DAC will host Speak Out….a space created to center the voices of survivors.
We are currently accepting anonymous submissions from survivors of domestic violence. Your words may be read aloud during the event by members of our community, including advocates, partners, law enforcement, and community leaders.
You do not have to share your name. You do not have to tell your entire story. You can submit a few sentences, a letter, something you wish people understood, something you survived, something you are still carrying, or something you want another survivor to hear.
Maybe it’s:
“What I wish someone had noticed…”
“What people didn’t understand about why I stayed…”
“What happened after I left…”
“What I needed someone to say to me…”
“What surviving looks like now…”
Too often, survivors are discussed without being given the opportunity to shape the conversation themselves. Speak Out is about making room for their voices.
If you have a story you would like included, please send it to me privately via email [email protected] or follow the submission information provided on the QR code. Your identity can remain completely anonymous.
And even if you don’t have a submission, please share this post. Someone on your timeline may have words they have been waiting for a safe place to say.

The Day of Unity Breakfast is about solidarity. The conference is about understanding. And both are for all of us.
Domestic violence impacts every part of a community. It shows up in our homes, workplaces, schools, churches, healthcare systems, courtrooms, neighborhoods, and social circles. That means this conversation cannot belong only to advocates or professionals who work in domestic violence.
Turning the Tide is for everyone who makes up this community.
Whether you are in law enforcement, education, healthcare, child welfare, social services, the faith community, business, local government, or simply someone who wants to better understand how to support others, there is a place for you in the room.
We will begin the day in solidarity at our Day of Unity Breakfast, standing together with survivors and families impacted by domestic violence.
Then we will move into understanding through the conference, looking beyond the bruises and exploring coercive control, post-separation abuse, the impact on children, accountability, community response, and the warning signs that are too often missed.
You do not have to be an expert to attend.
You just have to be willing to learn, listen, and recognize that everyone has a role in changing the tide.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and DAC has several opportunities for our community to come together, learn, show support, and help us continue the conversation. 💜
This month is about more than wearing purple. It is about awareness, education, accountability, survivor voices, and community action.
Throughout October, we invite you to join us for events created to bring people together in different ways, from hearing survivor stories, to supporting our mission through a fun community fundraiser, to taking part in deeper conversations about domestic violence and the role we all play in prevention and response.
Our October events include Speak Out, our Bowl-a-Thon fundraiser, and our Day of Unity Breakfast & Turning the Tide Domestic Violence Conference.

Someone’s past may in part help explain their behavior, but it does not excuse the harm they cause.
Trauma is not permission to control, manipulate, intimidate, belittle, threaten, or abuse another person.
You can have compassion for what someone has been through and still hold them accountable for how they treat you.
Understanding their pain does not require you to keep accepting yours.
At DAC, we want survivors to know: you deserve safety, respect, and relationships that do not require you to shrink yourself to keep the peace.

Partnership strengthens response. 💜
The Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County (DAC) is proud to partner with the Holly Hill Police Department and Family Life Center to provide law enforcement professionals with specialized training focused on responding to Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence in the field.
These encounters can be complex, and the way professionals respond in those critical moments matters. Through collaboration, education, and shared expertise, this training will help strengthen understanding of trauma, victim-centered responses, safety considerations, barriers survivors may face, and the dynamics that can impact a survivor’s decisions.
When law enforcement and victim service providers learn together, we strengthen our collective ability to recognize signs of abuse, respond with empathy, connect survivors to appropriate resources, and increase safety within our communities.
We are grateful to Holly Hill Police Department and Family Life Center for their commitment to continued learning, collaboration, and improving the response to survivors.
Because addressing Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence takes all of us working together. 💜
