For nearly four decades, when people in and around Naselle, Washington, needed help, Doug Sandell has responded. Now Doug is facing a life-threatening illness and could use our help.
Small towns like Naselle rely on the quiet labors of volunteers like Doug Sandell. It would be impossible to calculate how many hours he has dedicated to protecting and improving his hometown, but volunteerism has been a constant throughout his life.
Since 1989, Doug has been the Chief of the Naselle Volunteer Fire Department. In this capacity he is well-respected by the department’s members and board for his intelligent decision-making, focus on training and encouraging volunteers, and keeping the equipment and facilities well maintained. In addition to the time he has dedicated to the fire department, Doug is also a volunteer caretaker at the Peaceful Hill Cemetery, and devoted time to updating the playgrounds at the Naselle Lions Club Park and the Naselle School.
Doug is well-known in the timber industry throughout Southwest Washington, having spent his career working as a logger and truck driver with Johnson Forestry. Due to his illness, however, he can no longer maintain his normal work hours. His wife, Kim, has also had to curtail her work hours to help care for him. Doug’s medical care has included procedures not fully covered by his health insurance, resulting in a large and growing debt.
