Today, members of the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory had the opportunity to train alongside the MABAS Division 2 Technical Rescue Team, focusing on trench rescue operations, structural collapse incidents, and various shoring techniques used to stabilize compromised environments.

These low-frequency, high-risk incidents require specialized training, equipment, and teamwork. During today's training, personnel gained valuable hands-on experience identifying hazards, constructing shoring systems, and operating safely in complex rescue environments where every decision can impact both rescuer and victim safety.

We would like to thank the MABAS Division 2 TRT instructors and team members for sharing their knowledge and expertise. Training opportunities like these help ensure our firefighters are prepared to respond effectively when our community needs us most.

Continuous training, strong regional partnerships, and a commitment to excellence are what keep our crews ready for any challenge.

Public Safety Reminder from Saint Joseph County Fire Territory

Yesterday, crews from Station 18 responded to an incident just down the road from our station when a farm implement became entangled in overhead communication and electrical wires.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but incidents like this serve as an important reminder that utility lines can pose serious dangers during farming, construction, and transportation operations.

If you ever become entangled in power lines or utility wires:

• Stay inside the vehicle or equipment if it is safe to do so.

• Assume all wires are energized, even if they appear damaged or are lying on the ground.

• Call 911 immediately and notify the utility company if possible.

• Keep others away and establish a safe perimeter around the area.

• Only exit the vehicle or equipment if there is an immediate life-threatening emergency, such as a fire. If you must exit, jump clear with both feet together and shuffle away without lifting your feet.

Electricity can travel through equipment, the ground, and nearby objects. What may appear harmless can quickly become deadly.

We appreciate the cooperation of everyone involved and are thankful that this incident ended without injury. As always, we encourage everyone to be mindful of overhead hazards when moving farm equipment and other large machinery throughout our community.

Stay alert. Stay aware. Stay safe.

Beautiful weather and a perfect day to train.

Today, crews from the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory spent time sharpening our rural water supply drafting operations. In areas without hydrants nearby, the ability to establish a dependable water source quickly and efficiently is critical to protecting lives and property.

Training days like today help ensure our firefighters stay prepared for the challenges we may face tomorrow. From pump operations to water movement and tanker coordination, every detail matters when seconds count.

We train hard because our community deserves nothing less.

This Memorial Day, the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory asks our community to pause and remember the true meaning behind this weekend.

Beyond the cookouts, the long weekend, and the gatherings with family and friends, Memorial Day is about honoring the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice purchased the freedoms we enjoy every single day.

Today, we remember those heroes.
We honor their courage.
And we stand with the families who carry that sacrifice long after the flags are folded and the ceremonies end.

From all of us at the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory, thank you to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to the families who continue to carry their legacy forward.

Please have a safe Memorial Day weekend — and never forget why we remember. 🇺🇸

As Memorial Day weekend progresses, we want to remind everyone why this weekend truly exists.

It goes far beyond the cookouts, burgers, hot dogs, parades, and long weekends off. While we hope everyone enjoys time with family and friends, this weekend is ultimately about remembrance.

Memorial Day is for honoring the brave men and women who gave everything in service to our country. Those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we could enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted each and every day.

As you gather this weekend, take a moment to reflect. Say their names. Remember their sacrifice. Honor their legacy.

From all of us at the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory, we thank and remember our fallen heroes. 🇺🇸

There are moments in public safety that hit every one of us hard. The recent shooting involving a deputy from the La Porte County Sheriff's Office is one of those moments.

Behind every badge is a person who chose a life of service. A person with family, friends, coworkers, and a community counting on them to come home safely at the end of the shift. Incidents like this are a painful reminder of the risks law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS providers, and dispatchers face every single day while serving others.

The members of the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory stand with our brothers and sisters at the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office during this difficult time. We are keeping injured Deputy Jon Samuelson, his loved ones, and the entire agency in our thoughts and prayers.

Public safety is one family. When one of us hurts, all of us feel it.

We ask our community to keep all first responders in your thoughts tonight and remember the sacrifices made every day in service to others.

Training never stops at the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory.

This week, crews spent time sharpening skills on forcible entry and ladder operations — two critical tasks that can make all the difference when seconds count. From gaining access quickly and safely to positioning ladders for rescue and fire attack, these are the fundamentals that firefighters must be able to perform efficiently under pressure.

Reps matter. Muscle memory matters. Training together matters.

Our crews continue to put in the work behind the scenes so we’re ready when the community calls. 🔥🪜🚒
