🚨 MOVE OVER – IT’S THE LAW 🚨

On May 12, 2025, a Somerville Police Officer was concluding a traffic stop when they observed a vehicle approaching from behind that failed to move over, as required by Alabama law. Sensing the potential danger, the officer moved away from the roadway to a safer location. Moments later, the approaching vehicle crashed into the officer’s parked patrol vehicle and fled the scene.

Fortunately, the officer was not injured.

A nearby Morgan County Sheriff’s Deputy witnessed the incident and immediately initiated a pursuit. The suspect vehicle was stopped at the Cotaco Pure Gas Station, located at the intersection of Union Hill Road and AL Highway 36 East. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) responded to investigate the crash and conduct a DUI investigation. As a result, Shara Blackwell Legg, a 45-year-old resident of Jasper, AL, was arrested for driving under the influence. Other charges may be pending.

This event highlights the daily dangers faced by law enforcement officers — whether they wear the badge of a local officer, a county deputy, or a state trooper. What many consider a “routine” traffic stop can turn dangerous in a matter of seconds. Officers must remain constantly alert — not only to those inside the vehicle they've stopped, but also to every car passing by.

🔹 Alabama’s Move Over Law (Code of Alabama § 32-5A-58.2) requires drivers to:

Move over one lane when approaching any stopped emergency, law enforcement, tow, or utility vehicle with flashing lights.

If moving over is not possible, slow down to at least 15 mph below the posted speed limit and proceed with caution.

Violating this law can result in fines, license suspension, and criminal charges, especially if an injury or accident occurs.

🚔 Being struck by vehicles is one of the leading causes of officer deaths in the line of duty. Help us reduce these risks. Stay alert, move over, and slow down — whether you’re in Alabama or anywhere else in the country.

Let’s work together to keep our officers safe

On April 30th, 2025, officers with the Somerville Police Department located Michael Walden at a gas station just outside of town. Mr. Walden had an active misdemeanor arrest warrant. Upon placing Mr. Walden under arrest, officers detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person and believed he was under the influence.

During a search of his person, officers located several Xanax pills inside a white baggie in his pants pocket. An inventory search of Mr. Walden’s vehicle was conducted, during which officers discovered a concealed weapon and a half-empty open bottle of vodka.

Mr. Walden was transported to the Morgan County Jail and booked on the following charges:

Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance

Possession of a Concealed Weapon

Public Intoxication

Illegal Possession of Prohibited Liquor

Because a felony offense was involved, the case will proceed through Morgan County District Court. Once Mr. Walden posts bond on these charges, he will be booked on the outstanding misdemeanor warrant issued through Somerville Municipal Court.
